Jannik Sinner is set to take on Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Wimbledon Championships. It will be their second meeting at the All England Club with Sinner winning their first back in 2022. Ahead of the match-up, Simone Vagnozzi, a member of Sinner’s team gave his take on who will win the title on Sunday (July 13).
Sinner and Alcaraz will face each other for the thirteenth time on the tour and the third time this year. The latter leads the former 8-4 in their head-to-head record and has beaten Sinner in their last five meetings. In their past two meetings this season, Alcaraz first beat Sinner in straight sets at the Italian Open.
Then they met at the French Open, where Sinner took a two-set lead before Alcaraz came from behind to win the match in 5 hours and 29 minutes, the longest final in the history of Roland Garros. Also, Alcaraz is currently on a 24-match winning streak, the last time he lost a match was at the Barcelona Open final.
He has also won 33 of his last 34 matches dating back to April this year. On the other hand, Sinner has dropped only two sets at the Wimbledon Championship, while Alcaraz has dropped five. The Italian has also lost only two matches since his return to tour after serving a three-month suspension.
Ahead of their clash, Simone Vagnozzi was asked who would win the clash during an interview with Ubitennis. The Italian coach revealed that it is 50-50 and that the winner will be who seizes the opportunity to claim the victory:
At this stage, the Sinner-Alcaraz matches are 50-50. We saw in Paris how it was decided really on a few points, and it will be the same. Here, playing styles change a bit because there is more emphasis on defense, serving matters more, mobility is worse. I still think the match will be 50-50. We will see who will be able to seize the opportunity and who will be in better form that day.
Alcaraz and Sinner met at the French Open final and will meet again at the Wimbledon final. The last player to battle in two consecutive finals was Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in 2016, and the former won both matches. Alcaraz will be seeking to do the same against Sinner and claim his third consecutive Wimbledon title.
Jannik Sinner sustained an elbow injury after slipping in his fourth-round clash against Grigor Dimitrov. The Italian was given a medical timeout, but when he resumed play, he was not at his best level. He underwent an MRI scan the following day, but that didn’t affect his performance as he defeated Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic en route to the final.
During the aforementioned interview, Simone Vagnozzi was asked about the injury. He revealed that it affected Sinner’s performance against Dimitrov, adding that he hopes for a beautiful final between Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner:
We hope his game will vary a lot. Dimitrov played a very good match, but Jannik was somewhat affected by the fall, so he served slower and poorly and also played slower with his forehand. So it was easier to vary the game, it always depends on both sides. If you serve slower, it will be easier for Alcaraz to vary the game. Serving will matter a lot, and we have seen how well Alcaraz serves, especially in the last matches. We shall see, but I believe it will still be a beautiful final.
Sinner is in his first final at the Wimbledon Championships. The Italian is also in his third final in four tournaments since his comeback from suspension. He failed to defend the Terra Wortmann Open before arriving at Wimbledon.
