The 77-year-old wait for Great Britain to have one of their own men lift a Wimbledon trophy was ended in 2013 by Sir Andy Murray. Murray beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-4 7-5 6-4. He etched himself into Wimbledon glory. He also placed himself next to the greats of the game on that prestigious honors board. The last time a male British winner was seen on those courts was back in 1936–British legend Fred Perry had lifted the elusive trophy.

Wimbledon to unveil a Murray statue

Murray then went on to repeat this feat in 2016, defeating Milos Raonic in the final. Having brought a plethora of joy to the home crowd in his tenure as a player, Murray has found himself amidst a very honorable conversation. The 2027 Wimbledon Championships will mark 150 years of the Grand Slam.

The Associated Press reported that the Wimbledon committee has decided to build a statue of the Brit in the vicinity of the prestigious Grand Slam. He will join the likes of Fred Perry, who got his statue built on the 50th anniversary of his title. The chairwoman of the All-England Club, Debbie Jevans, said, “He’s got to rightly be very involved in that and him and his team will be.”

She further continued, “We looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland-Garros which was all very special, but we thought, what do we want for Andy?” The idea of Murray getting honored by his home Grand Slam was very much inspired from how Rafael Nadal etched himself into the French Open courts after his remarkable 14 championship wins on the French courts. It will be a great moment for one of Britain’s greatest athletes. It certainly will inspire generations of British players going forward.

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships will commence Monday, 30 June.
