Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ Wimbledon exit due to injury issues left him clueless about what he needed to do to get back to where he was before. Since 2024, Tsitsipas has played just three finals, winning two.
Last year, he lifted his third Monte Carlo Masters title and made it to the Barcelona Open final, losing the match to Casper Ruud. This year, Tsitsipas ended his title drought at the Dubai Open with a straight-set win over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Since that win, Tsitsipas has failed to reach a semifinal and made it to the quarterfinals just twice- in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. At Wimbledon, the Greek ace handed the walkover to Valentin Royer after losing the first two sets.
The former World No.3 currently stands at 27th position on the rankings table. All that Tsitsipas needs right now is a Big Title as he believes it will put an end to his poor run of form. Tsitsipas told Tennis365 at an Adidas event in London:
Not just a couple of matches. I need a big tournament to feel like I am where I want to be. My level is there. My confidence hasn’t shown in the games that are tight and tough. I have lacked a few points here and there, and we all know that men’s tennis is a few points here and there.
Tsitsipas has hired Novak Djokovic‘s former coach Goran Ivanisevic, who joined his team after his split with Elena Rybakina. But Ivanisevic has made it clear that he is not “Harry Potter” and so can’t end Tsitsipas’ trouble with the wave of a wand, as it will need some time to fix his on-court problems.
Following his Wimbledon exit, the Croatian coach had criticized Tsitsipas’ match preparation and fitness and urged him to fix things outside of the tennis court, though what those things are is not known. It could be due to his strained relationship with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, who also worked as his coach for a long time, and they split last year; it could also be due to his relationship with Paula Badosa.
Emotions got the better of Stefanos Tsitsipas when he faced Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon third round back in 2022. ‘The Bad Boy of Tennis’ got on his nerves, and he started to behave in a way that made him vow never to repeat it.
It turned me into a madman that day. I’ve never seen myself this way on the court. I was playing completely congested with a blocked nose that day, and it was getting to my nerves. I was already feeling a little feverish that day, and what was happening on the other side of the court triggered it even more and made me explode.
Stefanos Tsitsipas told Tennis365
Tsitsipas had also smashed a ball into the crowd in anger and had received a warning. But because he did not hit a spectator, he was not disqualified from the match.
Tsitsipas lost that match with a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) scoreline. Kyrgios later made it to the final (his first Grand Slam final) but ended up losing the match in four sets to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Since that match, they have never faced each other again. Tsitsipas has met Kyrgios five times, winning just one match.
Due to injuries and surgeries, Kyrgios could play just the Stuttgart Open in 2023 and missed the entire 2024 season. He made his comeback to tennis at the Brisbane International this year, but he did not secure a win before the Miami Open. So far this year, Kyrgios has played just four tournaments and hasn’t yet played a match since the Miami Open.
