One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Bjorn Borg, recently released an autobiography in which he opened up not only about his playing career but also about his life after what is still considered one of the most shocking early retirements in the history of tennis.
Despite ending his professional career at just 26 years of age, the Swede captured an extraordinary 66 Tour titles, including 11 Major titles–a tally that remains the fifth-highest for a men’s player in the Open Era.
The former World No. 1, despite leaving the tennis circuit prematurely, has remained a prominent figure in the sport in recent years, most notably serving as Team Europe’s captain at the Laver Cup until last year. And now, in an interview with Marca, he revealed which player from the current tennis landscape appeals to him the most.
“I think Jannik is more aggressive, but if I have to choose, I’d say Carlos because of how he feels the ball. He’s an incredible player and person. You feel very comfortable around him. Everyone loves him. I was surprised by what a great guy he is. The way he plays… For me, he’s the fastest on the court. I was impressed by his personality, and I wish him all the best.”
Having captained Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s edition of the Laver Cup, Borg had the chance to witness the Spaniard’s magic firsthand from the courtside bench, and it is safe to say he was more than impressed. Remarkably, Borg and Alcaraz are often compared as two of the greatest prodigies tennis has ever seen.
Despite relating more to Alcaraz’s style of play, Borg made it clear that tennis receiving two great champions in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner so soon after the Big 3 era is the best thing that could have happened to the sport — both from a historical perspective and for maintaining global interest.
“It’s the best thing that could have happened to tennis. I don’t miss any of their matches. It will be interesting to see how the major titles are distributed next season.”
That question is one that fascinates not only Borg but the entire tennis world, especially considering Alcaraz and Sinner have split eight of the last Majors between them. The 2026 season will offer both players a chance to complete the Career Grand Slam, an achievement even the legendary Borg never managed, and could play a decisive role in determining which of the two takes the next leap in a rivalry that, in terms of titles won, has been almost perfectly balanced over the past two years.
