The Swiss Indoors and the Vienna Open are the last two ATP 500 events of the season. The main draw matches of both events got underway on October 20.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is the defending champion, and last year, he defeated Ben Shelton and became the lowest-ranked player to take home the trophy. This year as well, the Frenchman is playing as an unseeded player in the 32-player draw.

From the 32 players, nine players are the seeded ones, with the top seed being Taylor Fritz. The American ace is chasing his third title of the season after his wins at the Stuttgart Open and Eastbourne International. He also played the final of the Japan Open but couldn’t go past six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Fritz will clash with reigning Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot in the first round. Because of his rankings (he is a World No.40), the Monégasque did not have to play the qualifying round. Fritz has never played the championship match at the Swiss Indoors in singles, but lost the doubles final back in 2019, along with compatriot Reilly Opelka, to the pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.

The second seed in the draw last year’s runner-up, Shelton, who is yet to win a match since his US Open second round. Shelton suffered an injury during the US Open and retired mid-match in the third round, following which, he suffered an opening-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters.

Apart from Shelton and Fritz, the other seven seeded players in the draw are: Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Denis Shapovalov. Four players grabbed a spot in the main draw after playing the qualifying rounds, while three players are wild-card entrants.

Ruud has never reached the final in Basel and is bidding to win his third title of the season following his success at the Madrid Open and Stockholm Open. In Stockholm (which he played before arriving in Basel), the Norwegian ace defeated Ugo Humbert.

Auger-Aliassime lifted the Swiss Indoors twice: in 2022 by beating Holger Rune and in 2023 by beating Hubert Hurkacz. Rune would have played the tournament had he not torn his Achilles tendon during his quarterfinal match in the Stockholm Open.

The tournament’s most successful player is Roger Federer , who clinched 10 titles and last won it in 2019 by defeating Alex de Minaur. It also ended up being his career’s last singles title (Federer retired in 2022).

The 22-time Grand Slam champion holds quite a few records at the Swiss Indoors, as apart from winning the most titles, he holds the record for the oldest winner (he was 38 in 2019). The youngest winner was Jim Courier (he was 19 in 1989). Federer also won the most matches (75).

In the ongoing Vienna Open, Jannik Sinner is playing as the first seed, chasing his fourth title of the season. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have skipped both the Basel and Vienna ATP 500 events.
