Taylor Fritz booked his place in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships after beating Karen Khachanov. The American star will now face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the final. Ahead of the match, the 27-year-old revealed that he’s confident of getting the better of the Spaniard.
This is Fritz’s first time in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. He has on two occasions failed to get to this stage of the competition. In fact, the last time he tried to reach the last four, he was stopped by Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals of 2024. However, this season, he has been one of the best players on grass.
He has only lost one match on the surface and that was against Corentin Moutet in the first round of the Queen’s Club Championships. He then won the Stuttgart Open, before going on to defend the Eastbourne title. Since arriving at Wimbledon, it was only in the fourth round that he didn’t drop a set, as Jordan Thompson retired from their tie due to injury.
He faced Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals and won the first two sets without facing a break point. But in the third set, he lost momentum, and Khachanov lifted the intensity of his game, and claimed the set 6-1. After that, Fritz found his footing and never looked back, winning 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4).
The World No.5 will now take on Alcaraz, whom he holds a 0-2 head-to-head record against. Despite never winning their matchup, Fritz believes that he can match the 22-year-old’s play when they face each other on Friday (July 11):
The key is that I am a much better tennis player than two years ago. I believe I am closer to the best, like Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic, here at Wimbledon 2025 than in Roland Garros, for example. I know that if I play like I did today in the first two sets, no one can do much against me.
Fritz last faced Alcaraz at the 2024 Laver Cup, where the latter defeated him in straight sets. Currently, Alcaraz is on a 23-match winning streak on tour and has not lost since April. The Spaniard has the momentum on the court and since Fritz has dropped a set in every match he has played (barring the Thompson one) at Wimbledon this season, apart from the fourth round, Alcaraz has a good chance of beating the American.
The first time Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, he lost to Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller in 2022. The second time, he fell to Lorenzo Musetti. The American star has not forgotten these two losses. On Tuesday (July 8), he produced a good display to beat Karen Khachanov in two hours and 36 minutes.
After the match, he revealed that he aims to face top players like Carlos Alcaraz with the best approach. He added during an interview with Tennis Channel that he would be at the same level when they clash in the Wimbledon semi-finals:
I am a competitor; when I face these guys and they beat me, what they cause is that I want to become a better player, reach the same level they have to compete better. These great players push you every day to want to improve, although I couldn’t specify how I could achieve it, they are just so good (laughs). The only thing that comes to mind to improve is by facing them many times and improving in some specific details, in those areas you only delve into when you measure up against the top players.
Fritz is among the players of his generation (90s born) who are yet to win a Grand Slam. His best run at the major tournaments was at the 2024 US Open, where he reached the final but lost the title to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
