Tennis Star Iga Swiatek Wasn't Happy With US Open Reporter's Question

Iga Swiatek's toughest competition at the US Open might just be the media.

Swiatek, the No. 2 seed in this year's tournament, defeated Suzan Lamens on Thursday in a tough three-setter. It wasn't an easy day at the office for the six-time Grand Slam champion, but she managed to get to the finish line and avoid a monumental upset at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Following her victory on Thursday afternoon, Swiatek was asked by a reporter if she'd consider putting beads in her hair at some point during the US Open. This was most likely a reference to Naomi Osaka's stylish look.

Swiatek wasn't just baffled by that question, she was legitimately annoyed.

"What kind of question is that, excuse me? If I wanted to weave beads in my hair? No," Swiatek replied. "What’s going on?"

A few moments later, Swiatek was asked about Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend's feisty post-match conversation. She wasn't overly fond of that question either.

"I can’t speak about every sport, because I don’t have enough knowledge, you know. We’re in this environment, we’re in the tennis world, we’re thinking about tennis mostly," Swiatek said. "But, you know, I think obviously the world’s changed throughout the years, and I know that there has been some issue yesterday, but honestly, I was so focused, I had [an] early match, so I wasn’t really — I’m not caught up on that. I’m probably going to catch up today. But you can’t really judge from a behavior of one person the whole community."

Swiatek's path to a US Open title.

On Saturday, Swiatek will face Anna Kalinskaya in what should be a fun third-round match.

If Swiatek defeats Kalinskaya, she'd take on either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Laura Siegemund in the Round of 16. As for the quarterfinals, she could take on Amanda Anisimova in a rematch of this year's Wimbledon final.

Swiatek is currently the odds-on favorite to win the 2025 US Open. She has been exceptional over the past two months, so there's no reason to bet against her right now.
