Former World No.1 Andy Roddick did not hold back when voicing his opinion on American billionaire Bill Ackman being granted a wildcard entry to play doubles at the 2025 Hall of Fame Open in Newport.

The 59-year old hedge fund magnate received a wildcard from tournament organizers to play professional doubles at the ATP Challenger event, teaming with retired American tennis player Jack Sock. Several members of the tennis community were not pleased with the decision, with many pointing out that Ackman allegedly received the wildcard due to his immense wealth, and not his tennis ability.

The team of Sock and Ackman would lose their first round match to the Australian team of Bernard Tomic and Omar Jasika. Nonetheless, this did not appease the majority of fans, with Roddick chiming in on the perceived favoritism shown to the billionaire.

"A disaster...The biggest joke I’ve ever watched in professional tennis," wrote the 2003 US Open champion on Twitter.

Former WTA World No.1 Martina Navratilova also spoke out on the decision. The retired pro is not shy to voice her opinion, and openly took shots at Ackman, implying he bought his way into the tournament.

"Apparently you can buy yourself a wild card. Oh to have the confidence…" wrote Navratilova on Twitter.

Following the match which was live-streamed, Ackman briefly addressed his performance during a Q&A session on social media. The CEO stated it was a humbling experience and admitted to suffering from stage fright during the match. Furthermore, the 59-year old revealed his body froze at several instances during his first professional match, making it difficult for him to move or even breathe properly.

The match would last for an hour and seven minutes, with Sock doing most of the heavy lifting. Despite being a four-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, the former World No.8 was unable to carry his team to victory.
