Roger Federer’s path to the 2015 Cincinnati Open title, a run he called the ‘perfect tournament’

To many, Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player we’ve ever seen. He doesn’t hold every record, and he didn’t win every title, but what he brought to the sport captured people’s attention in a way few others ever have. READ MORE: What Venus Williams did after her latest win that reminded her former coach of when she was 14 Federer combined tireless preparation with a level of skill that often made the game look effortless. That smoothness sometimes led people to believe he wasn’t working hard. But his career as a whole shows just how far off that idea was. Over 24 years at the top of professional tennis, Federer put together a remarkable list of achievements at some of the sport’s most important events. Cincinnati 2015 stands out as perhaps his most complete tournament — and it took place exactly ten years ago. Roger Federer’s flawless run in Cincinnati Going into the 2015 tournament, Federer wasn’t quite having the kind of year we were used to seeing from him. He was 34 by then, and there were signs that time was starting to catch up. He hadn’t won a Grand Slam that season. He’d gone out early in Melbourne and only made it as far as the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. There were still some deep runs, but Djokovic had his number in the finals of Indian Wells, Madrid, and Wimbledon. Cincinnati, though, was different. It was his only warm-up event before the US Open that year, and he made it count. Federer eased through to the semi-finals with straight-set wins over Roberto Bautista-Agut, Kevin Anderson and Feliciano López. That set up a clash with Andy Murray, who was ranked second in the world at the time. He got past Murray in two close sets before finally getting one back on Djokovic in the final. Remarkably, Federer didn’t drop a single set throughout the entire tournament. Afterwards, he said: “Oh yeah this is a perfect week so I’ll see how I feel tomorrow but today I am just really happy.” Roger Federer was the king of the American hard courts Frustratingly, Federer would then go on to lose yet another final to his Serbian nemesis in New York, once again thwarted by Djokovic on the biggest stage. And yet, the 43-year-old remains the undisputed king of the American hard courts, with only Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors able to match his five titles at the US Open. However, that merely scratches the surface of Federer’s brilliance during this period of the year, as the record-holder at Cincinnati for most titles won (seven). He remains the only man ever to have won the US Masters’ hard-court treble, as the winner of Indian Wells, Miami and Cincinnati Masters tournaments all in 2005. And he has actually twice completed a perfect tournament at each event too, winning both titles without dropping a single set. Whilst Federer is synonymous with grass as Wimbledon’s most successful male champion, he was also a serious threat during this part of the season following his usual All-England Club triumphs.

Dustin Rhodes Assigns Blame After Hulk Hogan’s Death

Following the shocking news of Hulk Hogan’s passing, wrestling legend Dustin Rhodes, known to millions as Goldust in WWE, took to social media to share a deeply personal and provocative reaction: “Hospitals truly kill people. I really do mean that.” Rhodes’ blunt statement stunned many fans, but those who know his story saw the pain behind the words. His father, the iconic Dusty Rhodes, passed away in 2015, aged 69, after a fall at home led to hospitalization for kidney failure. After his father's passing, Dustin shared a contemplative response on WWE's YouTube channel to discuss the legacy his father left behind. The news of Hogan's death comes just a month after reports suggested he was on his "deathbed" after undergoing a neck procedure back in May. Hogan's reps denied that was the case. In June, US Weekly reported that Hogan had also undergone a "pretty serious heart surgery and was doing well afterward." Dustin’s connection to his brother Cody Rhodes, now a top WWE superstar and face of the company’s next generation, is unbreakable. The Rhodes family legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of pro wrestling history, and seeing another legend like Hogan pass has clearly hit close to home. While Goldust and Hulk Hogan never had a headline-grabbing rivalry, they did share the ring once. It occurred in WCW in 2000 when Dustin Rhodes matched up against Hogan. Although their paths didn’t often cross in the squared circle, Hogan and the Rhodes family were part of the same larger-than-life era that helped define pro wrestling for decades and catapult the sport into society's zeitgeist. Rhodes’ comment about hospitals might not sit well with everyone, but it speaks to a raw and honest pain felt by someone who has seen too many legends, both personal and professional, fade away in similar fashion. The sport of wrestling has endured more than its fair share of lives cut short. As tributes continue to pour in for Hogan, Rhodes’ reaction serves as a powerful, if somber, reminder of the real human emotions behind the wrestling personas.

Seattle Storm Get Big Boost for Sky Game Amid Unexpected Angel Reese News

The Seattle Storm are looking to make things right after Tuesday’s 87-63 blowout loss to Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings. They get a chance to do so on Thursday when they return to action against the Chicago Sky in a road game at Wintrust Arena. The Storm got a big boost ahead of the Sky matchup, which comes in the form of seven-time All-Star Skylar Diggins returning to action after a one-game absence. After registering the first triple-double in WNBA All-Star Game history on Saturday, Diggins was unable to suit up against Dallas on Tuesday due to personal reasons. The 5-foot-9 guard was not listed on Seattle’s injury report for the Sky game, though, which means that Diggins should be back in the starting lineup come Thursday. This is a crucial development for the Storm, who will be looking to improve on their 14-10 record. In 23 games played this season, Diggins has produced averages of 17.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 triples per game. Chicago Sky List Angel Reese as Questionable to Play Against the Seattle Storm While the Storm got some good news ahead of Thursday’s clash, the same cannot be said for the Sky. This is after two-time All-Star forward Angel Reese was added to the injury report with a back problem. The silver lining is that Reese, who missed Chicago’s last game before the All-Star break with a leg injury, is listed as questionable to play, which means that there’s still a chance that she’s able to suit up against Seattle. Reese looked fine on Tuesday as Chicago suffered a 91-68 blowout loss to the Minnesota Lynx, posting an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. It is unclear exactly when Reese sustained the injury, but it has now placed her status against Seattle in jeopardy. It is worth noting that Michaela Onyenwere (knee) and Ariel Atkins (leg) have also been ruled out for the Storm game, as they continue to recover from respective injuries. This only means that Chicago will be significantly shorthanded on Thursday, especially if Reese also ends up sitting out.

Knicks, Warriors Could Make Blockbuster All-Star Trade

The New York Knicks are a team that has been thrown around in trade rumors all offseason long. The Knicks were eliminated in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers and are looking for any way imaginable to get back in the thick of things for next season's playoff run. Sporting News analyst Tyler Rourke suggested a trade that would send Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns to the Golden State Warriors for Jimmy Butler and Quinten Post. "Towns could be holding Jalen Brunson and the rest of the roster back with his high volume of shots, which is why the front office may be willing to deal him to another team — despite just landing him ahead of the 2024-25 season," Rourke wrote. "If that is the case, the Golden State Warriors would be the perfect option, and all it would take is his former teammate, Jimmy Butler and Quinten Post." "The Knicks have built a tough defensive identity with players like Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mitchell Robinson. Adding Butler to that group would solidify the best defensive unit in the league." "While Post doesn’t have the name value as Towns, he does have the ability to stretch the floor as a big man and will require less usage." The Knicks have uncertainty with Towns coming up in the final three years of his deal, so getting him out in favor of Butler would give the team more flexibility down the line. That being said, Towns can still be one of the best players in the NBA, especially at the center position. The Knicks made a big trade for Towns less than a year ago, so dealing him would not be something that the team should take lightly.
