Serena Williams remains one of tennis’ most iconic and influential figures of all time, having retired in 2022 as a sporting legend.

Her legacy remains just as strong today as it did over three years ago, and there is little chance of that diminishing anytime soon.

However, with hints that she may be edging towards a comeback to the sport, anticipation is growing even as the 42-year-old continues to shoot these rumours down.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking back on her retirement and the messages she received as she stepped away from tennis.

What Barack Obama said when Serena Williams retired from tennis

Whilst support from celebrities and fellow players is always heartwarming, seeing global figures take the time to send a message of congratulations must have been a particularly proud moment for the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

And, there are arguably few people as famous and universally liked as Barack Obama, who served as the president United States the between 2009 and 2017.

He was keen to congratulate Serena, and noted: “Congratulations, Serena, for your heart, skill, intelligence, dedication, and grace. Few athletes have inspired more people both in and beyond their sport!”

Michelle Obama would add, on Twitter: “How lucky were we to be able to watch a young girl from Compton grow up to become one of the greatest athletes of all time.

”I’m proud of you, my friend – and I can’t wait to see the lives you continue to transform with your talents.”

Could Serena Williams be making a comeback to professional tennis?

Whilst Williams has continued to distance herself from a potential comeback to tennis, fans are still waiting with quiet anticipation for her official announcement.

After all, a player and person with the showmanship that she commanded would not have wanted her triumphant return to the sport to have been leaked through an anti-doping document.

Williams will want fanfare, celebration, and exuberance – a comeback worthy of her excellence.

We will have to wait at least six months before she makes any kind of foray back into professional tennis, such are the rules associated with the anti-doping agency.

However, despite the legendary superstar taking to X to try and quell rumours of her return, many remain patient, expecting some kind of update in 2026 to confirm the unthinkable.
