While Coco Gauff’s WTA Finals win in 2024 was a career highlight, the only player to beat her during the tournament has seen a significant slide down the rankings since then.

The 2025 edition of the WTA Finals gets underway on November 1, with Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina joining Gauff in the race for the trophy.

The field looks as strong as ever and while Gauff heads into this year’s event as the defending champion, her only loss at last year’s tournament came against someone whose fortunes have changed dramatically since.

Marta Kostyuk beat Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals 2024

Marta Kostyuk came out on top against Coco Gauff in their group-stage match at last year’s WTA Finals. Despite that victory though it was still Gauff who went through to knockout stages ahead of Kostyuk after finishing second in Group B behind Aryna Sabalenka.

Kostyuk had been rising steadily up until then and hit a career-high ranking of world No.16 just before the end of last season. However she hasn’t managed to build on that momentum so far this year.

Kostyuk is now down to world No.27

At this point in 2025 it’s been a different story with just one semi-final appearance from four tournaments played so far this season – compared to four finals reached by March last year including two title wins.

As a result her ranking has fallen back down to world No.27 – not far off where she started before last season began when she was ranked No.31. She still has time though to turn things around again over what remains of this season but she’ll need another strong run somewhere soon if she hopes to close that gap anytime soon.

2024 WTA Finals player who dropped out of top 50

There are a couple of changes from last year’s tournament, with Keys and Anisimova making their way into the lineup this time around.

Krejčíková had a memorable run in 2024, entering the tournament as the lowest seed and still making a strong impression.

She picked up two group stage wins to book her place in the semi-finals, one of which was over Gauff, who went on to win the title.

Krejčíková lost her semi-final match to Zheng in straight sets, who would lose to the American in the final.

Krejčíková’s journey since the WTA Finals

Krejčíková’s 2025 campaign got off to a rough start, sidelined by injury for the first five months of the year.

She made her return during the clay court swing and picked up her first victory of the season at Roland Garros, defeating Tatjana Maria.

The former world number two has been climbing back up the rankings ever since, but she’s still just outside the top 50.

As things stand, Krejčíková is ranked 64th in the live standings after wrapping up her season at the China Open.
