Tommy Paul Reveals What Went Through His Mind While Watching Roland Garros Final Between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have won the last six Grand Slam titles and in the ongoing Wimbledon too, they are the heavy favorites to win. Last month, they locked horns in the final of the French Open-the first time they faced off in a Grand Slam summit clash and it did not disappoint at all.

It was what perhaps everyone expected it to be: nothing short of a thrilling clash that kept everyone on the edge of their seats for five hours and 29 minutes. Tommy Paul, after his first-round match at Wimbledon against Johannus Monday, was asked in the press conference what went through his mind while watching the final between the two young rivals.

We all know what it was. It was amazing. I love both of those guys. I love watching both.

Paul, who will square off against Sebastian Ofner, is projected to lock horns with Sinner in the fourth round and could only face Alcaraz if he reaches the final. The Spaniard holds a 5-2 head-to-head record over the 28-year-old and had knocked him out in this year’s Roland Garros quarterfinal. Against the three-time Grand Slam champion, Paul trails 1-4 in the head-to-head record and had also lost their clash in this year’s Rome Open semifinal.

You’re not gonna put together two weeks against these guys [to win a Slam]. We’ve got some catching up to do.

Tommy Paul added

Paul has never played the final of a Grand Slam tournament and at Wimbledon, he produced his best when he reached the quarterfinals last year. Alcaraz had knocked him out of the tournament then.

The five-time Grand Slam champion is playing the tournament as the two-time defending champion. It was 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, whom he defeated in the last two finals. Djokovic is the last player other than Alcaraz and Sinner to win a Major since the 2023 US Open.

The 22-year-old Spaniard survived a scare in the first round as it took him more than four hours to knock out Italy’s Fabio Fognini in five sets. He will next face Britain’s Oliver Tarvet on July 2. If he wins this year’s Wimbledon, he will complete the Channel Slam for two consecutive seasons.

Jannik Sinner is not concerned about fans’ reaction to his doping scandal

Jannik Sinner secured a spot in the second round of the Championships without breaking any sweat. He was up against Luca Nardi, whom he defeated 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 to schedule his second-round clash with Aleksandar Vukic.

At the press conference later, Sinner was asked whether he was worried about the reception of the public as he is playing his first Wimbledon since the doping scandal. The Italian thinks people have forgotten a bit about the case which is a “good and bad thing about today’s society.”

At first, everything was a bit different; people saw me in different ways, but I think everyone has seen that I’m a clean player, that I never intended to do anything wrong. I always try to be my best version and have a good team around me, and that’s what I’ll try to achieve in the future. The things I can control, I will, both on and off the court. It was an incident, yes.

Sinner is bidding to win his second title of the season following the Australian Open. At Wimbledon, the 23-year-old has never progressed beyond the semifinals, reaching the stage in 2023 (lost to Novak Djokovic) and last year, Daniil Medvedev knocked him out in the quarterfinals.

Sinner has faced his second-round opponent Vukic twice, winning both matches. But they will be facing each other for the first time on grass. Before scheduling the clash with Sinner, the Australian knocked out Tsen Chun-hsin in four sets.
