Iga Swiatek kick-started her 2025 US Open campaign in an emphatic fashion, defeating Emiliana Arango with scoreline of 6-1, 6-2. But survived a scare in the second round of the US Open.
Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens took the second set off her but eventually lost, with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 scoreline. The second seed will next be locking horns with Anna Kalinskaya. The World No.29 also dropped a set en route to the third round.
She clinched a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win over her first-round opponent, Clervie Ngounoue, following which she eliminated Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 7-5. Kalinskaya will face Swiatek for the second time this season.
Iga Swiatek was struggling a lot at the start of the season, so much so that she couldn’t even reach a final on clay, her favorite surface. She failed to defend all the titles she lifted last year, including the French Open.
But things changed when the grass swing started. Swiatek reached her first final on her least favored surface, at the Bad Homburg Open, but she couldn’t end the tournament in her favor, losing in straight sets to Jessica Pegula. It was her first final since claiming her fourth Roland Garros title last year.
Next was Wimbledon, and Swiatek surprised all by demolishing Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 to take home her career’s first grass-court title. After a fourth-round exit at the Canadian Open, the Pole continued her winning ways by clinching the Cincinnati Masters with a straight-set win over Jasmine Paolini.
Swiatek is bidding to win two Grand Slam titles in a season since 2022. Winning the US Open will help her inch closer to dethroning Aryna Sabalenka from the No. 1 rankings.
Anna Kalinskaya is chasing her career’s first singles title at the US Open. The 26-year-old did not win her first match until the Singapore Open in February this season. Following four more early-round exits, the Russian ace reached the quarterfinals of the Charleston Open.
Her poor run in singles continued until at the Citi Open, she progressed to the final but was denied the title by 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez. In the next two WTA 1000s, she reached the third round of the Canadian Open and the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Masters (lost that match to Swiatek).
Kalinskaya will be playing the third round of the US Open for the second time (after last year). The former World No.11 produced her best Grand Slam performance when she reached the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon.
The six-time Grand Slam champion won her third Major at the 2022 US Open by defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur. Last year, however, eventual runner-up Pegula eliminated her in the quarterfinals.
Swiatek and Kalinskaya will be squaring off against each other for the third time in their career. Their head-to-head record is currently tied at 1-1 after Kalinskaya’s win in the semifinal of the 2024 Dubai Open and Swiatek’s win in the quarterfinals of this year’s Cincinnati Masters. The 24-year-old has regained her form, so she not only is the favorite to win this match but also the tournament.
Match prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
