Day 10 at the US Open will see the first two of the women’s quarterfinal matches, and both of them should be great. Last year’s runner-up, Jessica Pegula, will face two-time Major champion Barbora Krejcikova. Meanwhile, last year’s champion, Aryna Sabalenka, will face former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. Our writers share their thoughts on both matches. Predicting these matches are Nurein Ahmed, Tope Oke, Ateet Shrivastava, Zain Mustafa, and Ilemona Onekutu. Who do you think will reach the semifinals?
Nurein:
Vondrousova played a superb match against Elena Rybakina, and she will need to replicate that performance against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian has underlined her authority by reaching the last eight without the loss of a set, but there have been a few jittery moments when she looked out of control. If Vondrouspova can put Sabalenka into awkward positions of hitting too many balls, then Sabalenka might be tempted into overpressing, and that’s when frustration sets in. It’s a big if, but Vondrousova is one of the few players with the tools to absorb Sabalenka’s power.
Prediction: Vondrousova in 3
Tope:
This will be the tenth encounter between the two players, with the top seed holding a 5-4 advantage. However, she has claimed the last four meetings on hard courts and leads 4-2 on that surface. In fact, Sabalenka recorded a 7-5 6-1 victory in Cincinnati just a few weeks ago, which could serve as a reference for how this matchup might unfold.
The playing surface may play a crucial role in this matchup, with Sabalenka’s strength in fast conditions likely giving her an advantage, but it certainly won’t be light work.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
Ateet:
Marketa Vindrousova is playing some of her best tennis, and it’s difficult for anyone to stop her in this mood. Defeating Elena Rybakina would have given her great confidence, and she knows she can beat Sabalenka. However, the world No.1 would rather face Vondrousova than Rybakina. Sabalenka has won the last four times these two met on hard courts, including most recently at the Cincinnati Open. It can go either way if Vondrousova keeps her serving level, but if it dips, Sabalenka will pounce.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
Zain:
A matchup that has historically been close, this should be the first real test for defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Marketa Vondrousova’s last two matches have seen her play legitimately top-eight-level tennis, defeating both Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina in convincing fashion—the final sets in each weren’t particularly close. She enters this match with confidence, but the lingering question remains: will her body and fitness hold up?
Sabalenka will look to overpower her opponent, while Vondrousova’s key will be to vary spins and heights in what promises to be a tactical chess match. The deciding factor, however, is Sabalenka’s dominance on hard courts. She is still firmly the best player on this surface, and in a contest that could go the distance, I would favor the superior player to find a way through.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
Ilemona:
Aryna Sabalenka has looked sharp, rolling through her matches with big serving and clean baseline hitting. Marketa Vondrousova thrives on redirecting pace and has the variety to make this a tricky contest, but she’s been second best in most of their past encounters. Unless Sabalenka wavers, Vondrousova’s consistency may not be enough to blunt the attack.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Nurein:
Pegula was widely tipped to flop in this year’s US Open after a poor run of results before the tournament. Her status as a top 10 player was under threat with runner-up points to defend. But those pre-tournament projections won’t come to fruition. There is still a possibility that she might make her second Grand Slam final. She’s played better tennis than Krejcikova, who pulled off one of the most stunning comebacks in the last 16. Pegula has been disciplined and solid throughout, and I don’t see her crumbling in the quarterfinals.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
Tope:
Although Pegula will have the support of the crowd and has yet to lose a set in New York, Krejcikova’s diverse playing style and her capability to switch from slice to powerful shots may disrupt that and could be crucial in their matchup. Moreso, her incredible comeback against Taylor Townsend will have given rise to a newfound confidence that she might secure her third Grand Slam singles title.
Prediction: Krejcikova in 3
Ateet:
Barbora Krejcikova saved eight match points to defeat Taylor Townsend in the fourth round. It was one of her most iconic comebacks as she displayed nerves of steel when saving those match points. Maybe the stars are aligning for her to win another Slam, but she will have to improve her level and start strongly against crowd favourite Jessica Pegula, who looked sharp against Ann Li.
Prediction: Krejcikova in 3
Zain:
American No. 2 Jessica Pegula takes on two-time Major champion Barbora Krejcikova, in a clash where the stakes couldn’t be much higher, and both players should genuinely like their chances. No result would come as a complete shock, given how they match up and the level they are producing right now.
Baseline control will be key, and based on how Pegula has played so far in this tournament, she holds the edge there. Still, as Taylor Townsend learned in the fourth round, a match against Krejcikova isn’t over until you’ve converted the final point. The Czech player has a knack for making things difficult, and if she does so again, she will have a real chance to progress. That said, my head still leans toward the more consistent player edging this one out.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
Ilemona:
Jessica Pegula has quietly put together a solid campaign, backing up her reputation as one of the steadiest players on tour. Barbora Krejcikova, meanwhile, has been the slayer of American hopes in New York, knocking out Emma Navarro and Taylor Townsend in back-to-back rounds. She brings variety and grit that can unsettle Pegula, though their head-to-head has often been decided by fine margins. This one feels set for another tight battle.
Prediction: Krejcikova in 3
