After some speculation on what Monegasque ATP Shanghai Masters Champion Valentin Vacherot would do with his schedule for the remaining weeks of the 2025 ATP Tour season, the overnight sensation has declared his intentions.
While there was some speculation Vacherot would focus on rest and preparation for 2026 after two weeks at ATP Shanghai in China changed his life, he did opt to accept a wild card that was offered by the ATP 500 Swiss Indoors ATP Basel tournament . The French speaking Vacherot is set to be one of the more intriguing players in a tournament that is set to feature Taylor Fritz, Ben Sheldon Holger Rune, and Casper Ruud as the top four seeds, all top-15 players.
Vacherot will look to keep the magic flowing but could run into one of the seeds in an early round match. His cousin and ATP Shanghai finalist Arthur Rinderknech is currently the first alternate on the entry list. A wild card was also awarded to the long serving Swiss warrior Stan Wawrinka.
Vacherot isn’t just getting marketing attention and publicity in Basel, he’s also seeking a main draw wild card for the final Masters tournament of the season, the ATP Paris Masters 1000, played just a train ride away from his home of Monte Carlo, Monaco. Vacherot told the media at a ceremony in Monaco “I thought I’d be playing in Asian challengers like I’m used to, after Shanghai. But no, finding myself at this new La Défense venue would be crazy for me.”.
The world’s top 8 players are set to compete in the ATP Paris Masters as seeds, only Novak Djokovic, who now plays a limited schedule at 38, is notably absent. Djokovic instead plans to play in ATP Athens, a 250 tournament, a week later, the tournament owned by his family that was previously played in Belgrade, Serbia.
Rinderknech, a French player, is also seeking a wild card for the Paris Masters, if he doesn’t get it he would still be in the qualifying draw. With four wild cards available for the main draw, and given the attention around both Vacherot and Rinderknech, it’s completely realistic that the tournament will opt to give them the wild cards.
ATP Metz would be Vacherot’s potential final tournament of the 2025 ATP season, Vacherot appears to be aiming to maximize his chance to earn valuable ATP ranking points at tournaments he previously lacked direct entry into. Vacherot has the next year to avoid a rankings cliff and cement himself solidly inside the ATP’s top 70. Nearly all of his ranking points and prize money came from the ATP Shanghai tournament, as the win gave him the largest rankings rise in the modern ATP era.
With three wild cards available, and Arthur Rinderknech on track to be a seeded main draw entrant, it appears likely Vacherot will join him in the main draw. The Metz tournament is set to be headlined by Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, with Alexander Bublik and Cameron Norrie other notable entrants.
