Victoria Azarenka has plummeted down the WTA Rankings in recent months in a feeling she will know too well from previous years before she suddenly ascended to the top again.
Albeit it was a new low this week as she fell out of the top 100 for the first time since 2006 as she battles to keep her status at the top. Marketa Vondrousova was one of those players also in the same boat from being top 20 to falling out of the top 100.
But Azarenka is showing some fight in the matter and ironically will return to the top 100 next week already. She passed through qualifiers and will now face Iga Swiatek on Wednesday. She eased through the tricky test of Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-2.
She had previously seen off Caty McNally and Veronika Kudermetova in previous rounds to make the first round. She is protected in reaching Wimbledon unlike Bianca Andreescu who has to play qualifying this week.
But Azarenka will soon follow the same fate if she doesn't manage to ascend again. Albeit off this evidence, she has shown that the fight is still there. Swiatek next also poses a good test.
Not known for her grass court prowess, albeit she likely wouldn't have liked either draw. Siegemund is horrifically tricky ad can bamboozle players on her day while Azarenka of course is a known quantity but a player who ordinarily is not unseeded or a qualifier. So that test will be interesting.
Elsewhere Jasmine Paolini has edged past Leylah Fernandez 7-6, 7-6. Beatriz Haddad Maia continues to show her grass court prowess thrashing lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 6-4.
While Jessica Pegula seems on the verge of victory over Katerina Siniakova. Naomi Osaka v Emma Navarro is also a top tie on Tuesday afternoon. But Azarenka v Swiatek will take top spot.
Victoria Azarenka, out of the top 100 this week for the first time since 2006 (!), gets a third consecutive win in Bad Homburg.
