Jannik Sinner was at advantage 2-1, serving in the second set of the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz when play was interrupted by a cork from a popped champagne bottle that landed on the Italian’s side of the court. Both players were slightly frustrated, and Sinner soon went on to win the game as Alcaraz hit a ball out.

The Spaniard had clinched the first set prior to this, coming down from 2-4. He saw himself once again trailing at 2-4 in the second set but couldn’t really fight back much here as Sinner went on to seal the set 6-4 with a forehand winner. The first two sets of the match witnessed some uncharacteristically numerous errors from both players.

However, things took a huge turnaround in the third set as Sinner became more creative and precise with his shots—his volleys, backhands, and an unbelievable in-between-the-leg shot at 3-2 in the third set. As Alcaraz struggled to return, Sinner once again clinched the set 6-4. Alcaraz once again found himself trailing at 2-4 in the fourth set. Another failed return from him led to Sinner sealing the victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Jannik Sinner ends Carlos Alcaraz’s attempt for a third consecutive Wimbledon title

This match marked the second meeting between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a Grand Slam final, after they met at an unforgettable Roland Garros final last month, where Alcaraz bravely fought back, saving three championship points to defend his title in the five-set battle.

This time, the World No.1 took his revenge as he snapped Alcaraz’s 24 match-winning streak and the dream for an elusive three-peat at SW19. Alcaraz was also aiming to be the third person to complete the Channel Slam multiple times.

It was an incredible effort from the 23-year-old as he defeated Alcaraz, a four-time grass-court champion, and won his first Grand Slam title outside of hard court. With this victory, Sinner also ended Alcaraz’ undefeated record in Grand Slam finals.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz was the strong favorite to win the Wimbledon title this year, as he had entered the match leading the head-to-head 8-4 against Sinner, having won their last five encounters.

The 22-year-old had also clinched the Queen’s Club Championships in his grass swing this year, while Sinner failed to defend his Halle Open title, facing an early exit. However, a few statistics did lie in favor of Sinner.

He had defeated Alcaraz in their previous grass court meeting at the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2022. Sinner was also in fine form throughout the tournament as he reached his maiden Wimbledon final with straight-set victories along the way, except for his fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov, where he dropped the first two sets before the Bulgarian retired due to a muscle injury.

This incident marked a major what-if moment, as fans wondered what would have happened if Dimitrov didn’t get injured and if Sinner could’ve still won the title or reached the final otherwise.

Nonetheless, Sinner is the first Italian to win the Wimbledon title. He has also won multiple Grand Slams in consecutive seasons, winning the Australian Open and US Open last year, and the Australian Open this year too. This also marks Sinner’s first title since returning from his three-month doping suspension.
