Casper Ruud produced one of the points of the tournament during his match against Matteo Berrettini at the Rome Open. The Norwegian ended up taking advantage of the local player's retirement during the second set to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament and extend his winning streak to 8 consecutive victories.
Despite Berrettini not being able to finish the match, there was room for an entertaining game between two former Grand Slam finalists. The first set was being played with the score at 2-2 and the Norwegian serving, when in one of the rallies, Ruud came out on top of a difficult ball with a 'between the legs return', which surprised Berrettini and the local fans.
Faced with the noise from the crowd, Berrettini tried to keep the ball in play and then went for a winner with a strong forehand that ended up in the net. Great point for Ruud and an ovation from the public who were experiencing a high level of tennis when the match had barely begun.
Unfortunately, the end of the match was not as expected, with Berrettini's retirement when Ruud was leading 7-5, 2-0. Only an hour and 2 minutes of play had passed. The Italian showed good statistics, with 68% of first serves in, winning 70% of them.
On the other hand, Ruud had 71% of first serves in, with a remarkable 88% of points won on the first serve. Berrettini also led in winners (15 to 9) and unforced errors (23 to 10 against his opponent).
The retirement of the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up allowed Ruud to advance to the round of 16 in Rome, where he will face the Spanish world No. 66 Jaume Munar.
