Frances Tiafoe lost his composure in his first-round defeat to Marton Fucsovics at the Japan Open. The world No. 29 had a tough return to the courts; he had taken the lead in the first set but failed to maintain it, ultimately falling in three sets: 6-3, 1-6, 5-7.
The 27-year-old American had seized the advantage in the first set, thanks to a single break point in his favor, while saving six break points against him. However, from the second set onwards, things began to fall apart for the former Top 10 player, and Fucsovics—who came through qualifying—ended up turning the score around.
Fucsovics dominated the second set, closing it out 6-1, while in the third set, he secured a break at a crucial moment when the score was 5-5, and ended up sealing a notable victory after two hours and 31 minutes. Tiafoe could not hide his frustration and immediately after the match ended, he began furiously smashing his racket against the ground before heading to the net for the handshake with his opponent.
Tiafoe is in danger of falling out of the Top 30 this week, depending on the results of his rivals, although he currently sits at No. 28 in the live ranking. He will have to overcome this defeat to focus on his next challenge at the Shanghai Masters next week, where he will be the 25th seed.
