After her one-hour, 34-minute win over Amanda Anisimova in the US Open final, Aryna Sabalenka celebrated her US Open title defense with a champagne bottle with her team in the locker room. The Belarusian finally heaved a sigh of relief after ending a Grand Slam tournament as a champion after two failures this season.

She was handed three-set defeats in the Australian Open and French Open finals by Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively. With this win, Sabalenka has become the first WTA player to defend the US Open crown after Serena Williams (2014).

Following the win, Sabalenka brought her champagne to the press conference. While answering, she also took a sip of the champagne and even offered it to the reporters.

Here’s the video:

It was her fourth title of the season following her wins in Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. Sabalenka also played her eighth final of the season in New York. In the previous two editions of the US Open, Sabalenka suffered a three-set defeat against Gauff in 2023, while last year, she finally grabbed the title by defeating Jessica Pegula.

Sabalenka has become only the third woman (since 1988) to reach the finals in three consecutive seasons at the Australian Open and the US Open after Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis. The World No.1 has improved her head-to-head record over Anisimova to 4-6.

The 24-year-old American, who has now played her fourth final of the year, has also suffered back-to-back defeats in Grand Slam finals. Before the last Major of the season, Anisimova was dismantled in the Wimbledon final by World No.2 Iga Swiatek.

Thanks to her US Open campaign, Anisimova will start the new week as the World No.4. So far this season, Anisimova has clinched only one title – at the Qatar Open by defeating Jelena Ostapenko.

Aryna Sabalenka on the US Open crowd

Aryna Sabalenka admitted during the trophy presentation that the crowd’s support for the home favorites – Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula – during the US Open finals last year affected her a lot. En route to the US Open championship clashes, Sabalenka played a home favorite.

In 2023, before losing to Gauff, she knocked out Madison Keys. Last year, she had to go past Emma Navarro in the semifinals, while this year, Sabalenka faced Pegula in the last four.

I love it. I love the support. I feel like throughout the years we built a relationship, and you guys give me so much support. My first year here, when I saw I had to play back-to-back against Americans, I was like, no way, guys. I was like I don’t want to play!

Sabalenka has become the first non-American in the Open Era to win multiple US Open titles after beating American players in the semifinals and the final. She is also only the third woman, after Naomi Osaka and Kim Clijsters, to win her first four Majors on hard courts.

And then coming back next year, I had to play back-to-back against Americans, but I felt a bit more support, and this year I felt even more support. So I am super excited to come back next year, and I hope you are all going to cheer for me! Thank you for bringing the best atmosphere.

Aryna Sabalenka added

This year, every Grand Slam women’s event saw an American play the final. Sabalenka and Anisimova, after some rest, will shift their focus onto the Asian swing.

The 27-year-old will aim to defend her Wuhan Open crown after playing the China Open, where she was a quarterfinalist last year (defeated home favorite Qinwen Zheng). Anisimova has never played a quarterfinal in a tournament in Asia.
