Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner are set for a semi-final showdown at the Wimbledon Championship Center Court. The pair will be meeting each other for the second time in less than six weeks. Tennis legend Roger Federer has predicted who will win the clash after being asked by a fan.
Sinner and Djokovic last faced each other in the semi-finals of the French Open, where the former defeated the latter in straight sets. However, the story is a little bit different at the All England Club, where Djokovic has won the title seven times in his career and has been to the past six finals of the competition since 2018.
In fact, he has finished as runners-up in the past two editions of the tournament and owns an outstanding 102-12 win-loss record at the All England Club. Also, Djokovic has faced Sinner twice at Wimbledon, and that was in 2022 and 2023, both matches ending in the Serbian legend’s favour.
On the other hand, Sinner has never been to the final of Wimbledon, the closest he has come is reaching the semi-finals twice. But, he holds a 5-4 lead in his head-to-head record against Djokovic and won their last four meetings. He almost suffered a defeat in the fourth round before Grigor Dimitrov retired due to an injury.
In a video shared on Instagram by Serbian media outlet Sport Klub, a fan who was driving around the All England Club stopped by after seeing Roger Federer and asked the Swiss legend who he thinks will win the semi-final clash. Federer replied at first:
Erm… who’s he playing? I don’t even know.
The fan then explained that the match was between Djokovic and Sinner. Then, Federer backed his former rival to defeat the World No.1:
I think Novak.
Djokovic will keep his hopes of becoming the oldest man to win Wimbledon alive should he beat Sinner in the last four on Friday (July 11). Also, if he does triumph at the SW19, he will become the oldest man to win a major singles title in history and will extend his Wimbledon tally to eight, equaling Federer’s record at the tournament.
Despite being 38, Novak Djokovic has been up to the challenge against the youngsters at Wimbledon. The Serbian legend has proven on several occasions that age is no number, but has found it hard to deal with a select few young stars, notably, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
During an interview with Sport Klub, he revealed that his body is different from what it was when he was younger. He added that he has done well to adapt to the new rhythm of training and communication in the sport:
My body is different, many things have changed. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt to these new circumstances, and it took (Vemić) a little more time to adapt to this new rhythm of communication, training, and everything else because what he remembers from those days over ten years ago no longer applies with the same intensity today.
Djokovic is the only player in his 30s, ranked in the top 10 of the ATP. He claimed his 100th tour-level title at the Geneva Open in May before the French Open. Last year, he stunned the tennis world by beating an in-form Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Paris Olympics and claimed his elusive gold medal.
