Ben Shelton clarified some of the main aspects of local culture in the midst of his participation at Wimbledon, giving a '0 out of 10' rating for several categories, including the traditional English breakfast with baked beans on toast.
The World No. 10 is preparing to face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals this Wednesday. While preparing to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the second time in his career, the 23-year-old American had fun answering some questions about his opinion on London.
In a Q&A session with BBC Sport, Shelton was asked about some traditional local foods. "Chips and fish?" – they asked the American.
"7.5," replied the World No. 10 with a not-too-pleased expression.
Then, regarding a cup of tea, he rated it a '9 out of 10,' although it was the British breakfast that he disliked the most, giving it the minimum score.
"Zero, zero. It's terrible," he said. "Nah, English breakfast is garbage. Who puts beans in?" added the American. "What are we doing? It’s terrible!"
Another aspect about which Shelton expressed his particular disgust was with the roads in England. "Zero. I thought this the worst place to drive in the world," he said. "You make the road and you let people to park on the side of the road. So there’s only room for one car, but then you said, it’s a two-way street, so then you have to pull in and parallel park, so one guy can go past and the other goes past. It takes you like 35 minutes to go 3 miles."
For the American, the roads would be the main reason why London isn't among his favorite cities. "It’s a good city, I would say like a 7 out of 10. It would be a nine, or ten out of ten if it wasn’t for the driving."
