Former World No.3 Grigor Dimitrov was in prime position to upset top seed Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. However, the Bulgarian would suffer a devastating injury during the match, forcing him to retire as he held back tears.
The 34-year old was coming off a straight sets win over Austrian Sebastian Ofner in the third round, and appeared to have a stiff challenge ahead of him as he squared off against the World No.1. However, Dimitrov shocked Centre Court by taking the first two sets, and his confidence was sky-high when tragedy struck.
With two sets in the bag and the third set tied at two games apiece, Dimitrov would sustain an injury while serving. This prompted the Bulgarian to fall to the ground clutching the right side of his body. After a brief medical timeout that saw him leave the court, Dimitrov would return and forfeit the match, stating he was unable to continue.
It was later revealed that Dimitrov had suffered a partially torn right pectoralis major muscle. Although his return date is unknown, Jamie Delgado, a member of Dimitrov's coaching team, admitted the World No.21's recovery will be a difficult one.
"We are completely devastated, disappointed, and heartbroken," said Delgado in an interview with Eurosport following the injury. "Grigor had made a huge effort to play a top-level match against the world number one in his favorite tournament. He followed the previous day's tactical plan to perfection, but what happened is truly painful.
"Against Sinner, he played one of the best matches of his career, and the whole team was convinced he could win. Looking ahead, Grigor's emotional and mental recovery will undoubtedly be more difficult than his physical one. We have some difficult months ahead of us."
Conversely, Sinner would advance to the quarterfinals, where he defeated American Ben Shelton to book a semifinal showdown against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Get well soon, my friend. Wishing you all the best ❤️ @GrigorDimitrov pic.twitter.com/pKvd9hnDOB
