What Carlos Alcaraz did as Jannik Sinner returned to court as Wimbledon champion, spotted by Marion Bartoli

Carlos Alcaraz’s 728-day reign as Wimbledon champion ended on Sunday.

He went into the final as the favourite, facing off against Jannik Sinner. It was their sixth meeting on the ATP Tour, with Alcaraz having won all five previous encounters – the latest a dramatic clash in Paris.

The Spaniard took the opening set, and it seemed the script from their previous encounters was set to repeat. This time, though, Sinner mounted an impressive comeback, rallying to claim a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory and his first Wimbledon title.

As the ceremonies unfolded, former champion Marion Bartoli caught a subtle moment as Sinner re-emerged to the court after celebrating with his team.

Alcaraz, still courtside, made a gesture that suggested more than just disappointment – a fleeting glimpse into the mindset of a champion forced to concede the spotlight.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Bartoli praised Sinner’s resilience and highlighted what she saw from Alcaraz during the celebrations.

“So deserved, to be able to come back, play another Grand Slam, his fourth consecutive one, against the exact same opponent, in the same situation, serving for the match, and to pull out the game he has been able to pull together…” she said.

“He is actually now clapped by Carlos Alcaraz, who is sitting on his chair, clapping the performance of Jannik Sinner and his whole team as they embrace together.

“I can’t start to even imagine what they’ve been going through until this final, until this rematch, until this revenge.”

Sinner got his payback in their Wimbledon rematch. The Italian not only won his first title away from hard courts but also picked up his fourth Grand Slam title.

The rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner continues to grow. Both are often referred to as the ‘new two’ of men’s tennis. Another former Wimbledon champion has also weighed in on their latest meeting.

Pat Cash says Carlos Alcaraz’s serve fell short against Jannik Sinner

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash shared his thoughts on Sinner’s victory over Alcaraz.

“Great performance wasn’t it, great serving, nullifying the drop shots of Alcaraz,” he said.

“Alcaraz was definitely below par on serve, which made the big difference.”

Alcaraz committed seven double faults, which made Sinner’s job easier during the match. The Spaniard also landed just 53% of his first serves.

Player Aces Double faults 1st Serve % Win % on 1st Serve Win % on 2nd Serve
Jannik Sinner 8 2 62% 75% 64%
Carlos Alcaraz 15 7 53% 75% 58%

The Italian’s level never dipped, something Cash found extraordinary, as he commented on the trials and tribulations of Sinner’s 2025 campaign.

“From what he’s been through this year and last year, to get three Grand Slams after that drug ban, scandal, it’s phenomenal,” said Cash.

“He’s just such an incredible ball striker; when he’s hot, he’s untouchable really.

“His performance was just so solid the whole match. I know Carlos was up and down a little bit; that was the difference; his performance just didn’t dip at all.

Sinner’s consistency stood out because his play remained steady from start to finish.

Sinner’s win closed the gap between him and Alcaraz in terms of active Grand Slam titles. The US Open in September could be another chance for him to draw level with Alcaraz at five majors each if he can continue this form into New York.
