Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic played out a thrilling rivalry on the ATP Tour, with both going down as tennis greats.

Many tennis fans may argue that Federer is the best male player ever ahead of Djokovic, although it is the latter who is ahead in the all-time Grand Slam titles list.

Djokovic occupies first place in the list with 24 triumphs, followed by the 22 of Rafael Nadal and the 20 of Federer.

Moreover, the Serbian came out on top in his head-to-head battle with the Swiss icon, winning 27 of their 50 matches.

Roger Federer is the only player to win his first three matches against Novak Djokovic

Federer does, however, boast a fantastic record over his old ATP nemesis, one that is unique to him and him alone.

He hugely impressively won his first three career meetings against Djokovic, and remains the only player to achieve that feat.

In Athens earlier this season, Chilean ace Alejandro Tabilo had the opportunity to join Federer in that regard.

Tabilo had won his first two matches against the Serbian legend, but lost their ATP 250 indoor hard-court clash 7-6(3), 6-1.

Novak Djokovic had mixed feelings after his first match with Roger Federer

Federer started his superb run with a round of 64 victory over Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo in 2006.

It was posed to the Serbian after his loss that he should still be satisfied with his game, to which he replied: “Yeah, yeah. I mean, I am very satisfied with my game that I played today against Federer.

“But on the other hand, I’m disappointed not because of my game, it’s just because I know that I had chance to win. That’s why.

“Like I said, couple of points decided, and my chance was today to win against Roger because it’s his first match outside on the clay and I played qualifications two matches. So, yeah, this was my chance.

“But, anyway, this will be a big experience for me and my confidence will grow up for sure after this match because I know that I played well.

“Just I’m still young, so I just need to have more and more matches like this so I can learn how to play against these kinds of players.”

Of course, Djokovic went on to flip his head-to-head with Federer around, and even has the chance to extend his Grand Slam tally in 2026.
