Andy Roddick has questioned the method behind having odds in tennis ahead of Wimbledon 2025. The third Grand Slam of the year will begin on June 30. In the men’s singles category, Carlos Alcaraz will defend his title. He won last year’s competition after beating Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
In the women’s singles category, the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini in the final with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to lift the title. Former world number one Roddick has recently spoken with the Tennis Channel, discussing women’s tennis ahead of Wimbledon 2025. Roddick stated that he has no idea what the formula is for having odds in tennis, as he could not understand why last year’s finalists were not amongst the favourites to lift the title.
"These odds... like, what the hell are we doing?,” said Roddick. “We have no Paolini, no Krejcikova. We've just deleted last year's final. Jess Pegula can be an absolute monster on grass with her shot and the way that it kind of goes to the corner and her ability to switch directions... we need to review those."
Roddick also spoke about the reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff, who lifted her second Grand Slam title after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Roddick was of the opinion that while Gauff had success on clay, it would not matter much on grass court, where she is likely to struggle with her current technique.
"She's [Gauff] confident coming off of Roland Garros,” said Roddick. “Listen, the book on Coco hasn't changed because she's won Roland Garros. She's so good at what she does, but the entry point to the forehand with pace is still going to be the thing that people try to do against her consistently. The easiest surface to do that on, in my opinion, against her, is on grass.”
A place like no other. A Championships like no other.
