Carlos Alcaraz made another stride forward toward his third consecutive title at Wimbledon. But a tough challenge awaits him in the third round.
The Spaniard is pitted against 14th seed Andrey Rublev. They will face each other for the first time on the grass.
Carlos Alcaraz has achieved the most success on the men’s tour this year. After a slow start to the season, Alcaraz arrived at Wimbledon with five titles under his belt, three of which he captured on clay.
The 22-year-old started his season at the Australian Open where 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic knocked him out in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz then lifted his career’s first indoor hard-court title at Rotterdam but afterward, he failed to reach the finals of the three consecutive tournaments he played next.
He failed to defend his Indian Wells title and suffered an opening round exit in Miami, entering the clay swing without winning a Sunshine Double title for the first time since 2021. For his performances, he received a lot of criticism but he completely shut the critics when the clay swing started.
Alcaraz skipped the Madrid Open due to an injury but he reached every final of the tournaments he played on the red dirt, losing just the Barcelona Open. He lifted his career’s first Monte Carlo Masters (beat Lorenzo Musetti) and Italian Open title (beat Jannik Sinner).
Then at the French Open, he continued his winning ways and scheduled a clash in a Grand Slam final with Sinner for the first time. Alcaraz wrapped up the French Open in his favor after securing a five-set win in over five hours during which, he saved three championship points in the fourth set.
Rublev, on the other hand, had an inconsistent start to the season. He failed to win three consecutive matches in the four tournaments he played, before ending his title drought at the Qatar Open by beating Jack Draper in the final.
Following a few more early-round exits (in seven back-to-back tournaments), Rublev played the Hamburg Open final, only to lose the match to Flavio Cobolli. In the two Majors before Wimbledon, the 27-year-old lost to Joao Fonseca in the Australian Open first round, followed by his defeat to Sinner in the fourth round of the French Open.
Before arriving in London, Rublev was knocked out of the Halle Open by Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the last 16. He eliminated Laslo Djere, Lloyd Harris, and Adrian Mannarino before scheduling the clash with Alcaraz. The five-time Grand Slam champion secured victories over Fabio Fognini, Oliver Tarvet, and Jan-Lennard Struff in the previous round.
Alcaraz will enter the match as the favorite to win because he not only has an edge over Rublev in the head-to-head encounters (2-1), but he is also playing the tournament as the two-time defending champion (beat Djokovic in both finals). Rublev has lifted 11 titles on grass and six on clay.
But on grass, he has played in two finals (2021 and 2023 Halle Open), losing both. Alcaraz is the winner of four grass-court titles, lifting his fourth one at this year’s Queen’s Club Championships.
Match Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in four sets.
