Luck was mixed in the fourth round of Wimbledon for the American representatives who played today. World No. 10 Ben Shelton secured a hard-fought victory against Lorenzo Sonego and guaranteed his first quarterfinal appearance at the All England Club.

However, Emma Navarro suffered a defeat against teenager World No. 7 Mirra Andreeva in straight sets. She bids farewell after an irregular performance, and her exit from the top-10 is confirmed at the end of the tournament after failing to defend the quarterfinals reached in 2024 (she will appear as No. 11).

Shelton storms into quarterfinal

Ben Shelton claimed a tough four-set triumph over Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. The American started a set down but managed to regroup from the second set onwards, proving more decisive in key moments to secure a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory.

Sonego proved to be a tough opponent, capitalizing on an early break in the match – on his first break point – and then holding onto his serve to take the set. The American had a few break points at the end of the set and saved a couple of set points against him, but ultimately the Italian prevailed 6-3.

However, in the second set, Shelton refined his serve, winning 86% of first-serve points in a 31-minute set to take it 6-1. The following two sets were a battle that could have gone either way, but the American's class ultimately prevailed in a tie-break in the third set and 7-5 in the fourth. Shelton reaches World No. 9 – his career-high ranking – and awaits the winner between Grigor Dimitrov (19th) and Jannik Sinner.

Navarro falls to to Andreeva

Emma Navarro couldn't overcome teenager Mirra Andreeva, who reaches the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. The Russian World No. 7 hadn't had a great grass-court swing before arriving at SW19, but the return of former champion Conchita Martinez to her team has had an effect, with an imposing 6-2, 6-3 victory that knocks out the World No. 10.

In the first set, Andreeva quickly took the lead, being especially effective in important moments. In the third game, she capitalized on her first break point, and in the fifth, she repeated the feat. The Russian won five consecutive games and closed out the set 6-2.

Things didn't change much in the second set. Both started with exchanged breaks to maintain equality at 1-1, but Andreeva quickly exploited her opponent's first-serve problems. The American won only 44% of points on her first serve and 29% on her second throughout the second set. Although Navarro managed to secure two breaks amidst her opponent's nerves, Andreeva was ultimately impressive on return, totaling four breaks in the set and taking a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The Russian reaches her third Grand Slam quarterfinal at just 18 years old and is preparing to face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.
