Wimbledon Champion Iga Swiatek Will Call Herself Grass-court Specialist If She Does ‘This’

Who would have thought that Iga Swiatek would be ending her trophy drought at Wimbledon? Perhaps even she didn’t.

Swiatek has now become a Wimbledon champion and what she did in the final was a total demolition of Amanda Anisimova. Swiatek just did not show any mercy to the American ace, denying every chance to win a game in what has also become the most lopsided Wimbledon final.

Before securing a berth in the championship clash, the 23-year-old overcame World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and was expected to perform the same way, or even better, to make Swiatek’s stay on the court difficult.

But that was not at all the case. All Swiatek did on Saturday (July 12) in the first set was race to a 6-0 win. Earlier in the second set, Anisimova tried to make a comeback, but again, she could do nothing much against the now six-time Grand Slam champion.

Swiatek, with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, has become only the second woman after Steffi Graf to win a Major by handing a double bagel to her opponent. The retired German player produced this at the 1988 French Open.

The Wimbledon win was also the 24-year-old’s first trophy on grass. She played her second final on the surface following the Bad Homburg Open, which she played just before arriving in London for the grass-court Major. Jessica Pegula denied her the win, leaving Swiatek in tears.

Swiatek then wondered if reaching the Bad Homburg Open final meant she had any hope on grass. Has she become a grass-court specialist now that she has captured the Wimbledon trophy? Swiatek doesn’t think so because she knows that she needs a lot of improvement.

I don’t know yet. I don’t know yet. I think after I learn to play slice and drop shots, then I’ll do that.

Iga Swiatek told ESPN

It was Swiatek’s first meeting with Anisimova on the tour. Like Swiatek, Anisimova too was playing her second grass-court tournament following this year’s Queen’s Club Championships, which she lost to Tatjana Maria.

John McEnroe gives his verdict on Iga Swiatek’s ruthless performance

Before this year, Iga Swiatek had produced her best performance at Wimbledon when she reached the quarterfinal in 2023. Twice she got knocked out of the third round and once in the fourth round.

Swiatek had never dreamed of winning Wimbledon because she thought her game suited the clay most. Even those in the commentary box during the final, like John McEnroe, were in utter disbelief.

I think almost everyone is in a state of shock at what transpired. I have to hand it to Swiatek. I don’t think there are many people who saw this coming, that she would be this good on this surface, after the struggles she has had. So all credit to her. She played a fantastic hour. She played against someone who absolutely froze, which is really hard to watch. I feel terrible for her.

John McEnroe told BBC Sport

Swiatek has now reached the final of three Grand Slam tournaments. She has also won the six finals she has played in the Majors. The Wimbledon title was Swiatek’s first victory of the season and her first since the 2024 French Open.

In the tournament, only once Swiatek had dropped a set- in the second round against Caty McNally. Thrice she has registered a bagel to her opponent- to Anisimova and to Belinda Bencic in the second set in the semifinal.

The World No.4 will start the next week as a No.3 player, removing Jessica Pegula. Anisimova too will reach her career-best ranking of No.7 on Monday.
