Day 1 of Wimbledon kicks off with a whopping 32 women’s matches–half of the first round. As always, our team here at LWOT will share their thoughts on every single match with you. We split the 32 matches between eight articles. In addition to this articles, the other feature Aryna Sabalenka vs Carson Branstine, Elina Svitolina vs Anna Bondar, Emma Raducanu vs Mingge Xu, Leylah Fernandez vs Hannah Klugman, Madison Keys vs Elena Gabriela Ruse, Naomi Osaka vs Talia Gibson, and Jasmine Paolini vs Anastasija Sevastova. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Tope Oke, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will win?
Jordan:
Golubic has a decent game on grass when she plays well. But the Swiss is also past her prime. Li beat Anastasia Potapova and competed well against Emma Raducanu in the run up to Wimbledon, and her greater sharpness could make this a tough matchup for Golubic
Prediction: Li in 2
Tope:
Li can be a tricky opponent when she finds her rhythm. However, considering Viktorija Golubic’s vast experience at this venue, it should be a routine for the Swiss veteran.
Prediction: Golubic in 3
Yesh:
Golubic’s backhand is still a joy to watch on grass. She still has real potential on this surface, and I think she’ll give herself a chance to make some waves this tournament.
Prediction: Golubic in 2
Jordan:
Bucsa possesses an awkward, flat-hitting playing style that is not easy to face on grass when she finds her best. Todoni showed what she can do on the surface by almost beating Linda Noskova in Nottingham. It could be a tight battle, but I think Bucsa’s style might be one that Todoni struggles against.
Prediction: Bucsa in 3
Tope:
Anca Tondoni hasn’t won a main draw match on Tour since defeating Cristina Bucsa in Brisbane in January, and while neither of them is particularly superior on grass, Bucsa still has more experience and the desire to level their head-to-head.
Prediction: Bucsa in 3
Yesh:
Todoni played really well in Nottingham last week, which makes me think on current form she should be favored in this matchup. I’m not sure what Bucsa can do if Todoni is playing well.
Prediction: Todoni in 3
Jordan:
Pera’s worst chance of beating Noskova is on grass. She will find it challenging to hold off Noskova’s power and use her defensive skills. The Czech is also in good form after reaching the semifinal in Bad Homburg.
Prediction: Noskova in 2
Tope:
Bernarda Pera didn’t win a single Wimbledon match in five attempts till last year, when she made a commendable third round finish. Up against Noskova, who has lost just twice in seven matches on grass this season, will be a tall order and the Czech is expected to complete a hat trick of wins over the American.
Prediction: Noskova in 3
Yesh:
Noskova is a future star who has already had some mini-breakouts, but we’re still waiting for the real thing. Will it be this fortnight? Honestly, there’s a chance.
Prediction: Noskova in 2
Jordan:
There is a fascinating clash of styles in this matchup. Putintseva’s athleticism and variety against Anisimova’s brute power. Despite Anisimova reaching the final at the Queen’s Club a few weeks ago and Putintseva enduring a difficult season, I am backing the Kazakhstani. Her playing style is suited to disrupting Anisimova and I have a feeling she will find inspiration at Wimbledon.
Prediction: Putintseva in 3
Tope:
Despite five opening round losses, Amanda Anisimova has still made something of her season, especially on grass where she reached the Berlin quarterfinal and finished runner-up at Queen’s. Against Putintseva, who has only made it past the second round in Wimbledon just once in ten attempts, the American will be confident of a win.
Prediction: Anisimova in 2
Yesh:
I freely admit that I often overestimate Anisimova. Her game has never flourished on grass, and I’m not sure why. Her performance in Queen’s earlier this month suggests it might be ready, which is why I think she can go deep at Wimbledon this year.
Prediction: Anisimova in 2
