Day 1 of Wimbledon kicks off with a whopping 32 women’s matches–half of the first round. As always, our team here at LWOT will share their thoughts on every single match with you. We split the 32 matches between eight articles. In addition to this articles, the other feature Amanda Anisimova vs Yulia Putintseva, Elina Svitolina vs Anna Bondar, Emma Raducanu vs Mingge Xu, Leylah Fernandez vs Hannah Klugman, Madison Keys vs Elena Gabriela Ruse, Naomi Osaka vs Talia Gibson, and Jasmine Paolini vs Anastasija Sevastova. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Nurein Ahmed, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will win?
Jordan:
Danilovic is less comfortable on grass than the other surfaces. This draw gives the Serbian a decent chance of avoiding an opening round exit. Zhang is a former quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, but the 36-year-old has been past her prime for a while. Danilovic is backed to win a competitive match.
Prediction: Danilovic in 3
Nurein:
Danilovic usually shines on slower clay where her topspin forehand does a lot of damage. But if you still take out that forehand weaponry, she is vastly superior to Zhang. The Chinese has instinct and doubles experience which might help, but only partially.
Prediction: Danilovic in 2
Yesh:
Zhang has played well here in the past, but she is well past her prime. A close match would be nice, but I’m not sure the Chinese player is up to it anymore.
Prediction: Danilovic in 2
Jordan:
Martic is very experienced and has win three matches at SW19 since qualifying. Although Parry’s game suits grass quite well, especially because of her slice, the Frenchwoman has mostly struggled since returning from an injury in April. That gives Martic a good chance of winning.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Nurein:
This is an all-qualifier match that promises a lot of quality shots, but it will most likely be assigned an outside show court. That said, it is Parry who might just nick this. She is quicker than Martic and has great a backhand slice to disrupt rhythm.
Prediction: Parry in 3
Yesh:
Petra Martic was once a force on these courts, but those times don’t seem like they’re returning any time soon. On the other hand, there’s really nothing stopping her. If she finds a nice rhythm on the grass, she can be very tugh to beat.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Jordan:
This is the ideal opening round for Krueger. Her 16-year-old British opponent, a wild card for the event, tried and failed to qualify for three tournaments before Wimbledon. Krueger should overpower the teenager.
Prediction: Krueger in 2
Nurein:
It’s time to see what Stojsavljevic is made of and whether the hype is real. This is amassive moment for the 17-year-old who is a Grand Slam junior champion at junior level. But she has tough opening match. Ashly Krueger has a great track record on grass and is a big hitter who will love these conditions.
Prediction: Krueger in 2
Yesh:
Krueger is a solid grass playe. Stojsavljevic is only here because she’s a Brit. This shouldn’t be close.
Prediction: Krueger in 2
Jordan:
Branstine created headlines a few weeks ago after knocking out defending champion Liudmila Samsonova at the Libema Open. The task of overcoming Sabalenka is considerably harder than that. This will be a great experience for the Canadian, but I do not think an upset is on the cards.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Nurein:
Branstine has already shown serious potential in this tournament in qualifying, but she’s nowhere near the level required to handle Sabalenka’s full-throttle assault. The Belarusian is the World No. 1 and the favorite for the title and I expect a statement win.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Yesh:
Sabalenka is the best player in the world right now. And while she isn’t as dominant on grass as some other surfaces, she should cruise here.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
