Day 1 of Wimbledon kicks off with a whopping 32 women’s matches–half of the first round. As always, our team here at LWOT will share their thoughts on every single match with you. We split the 32 matches between eight articles. In addition to this articles, the other feature Aryna Sabalenka vs Carson Branstine, Elina Svitolina vs Anna Bondar, Emma Raducanu vs Mingge Xu, Amanda Anisimova vs Yulia Putintseva, Madison Keys vs Elena Gabriela Ruse, Naomi Osaka vs Talia Gibson, and Jasmine Paolini vs Anastasija Sevastova. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Tope Oke, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will win?

Wimbledon Day 1 Women’s Predictions

Elise Mertens vs Linda Fruhvirtova

Jordan:
Fruhvirtova’s talent has been known for a long time. She will need all that ability to challenge Mertens, who won the Libema Open a few weeks ago and is usually very solid against lower-ranked players in the early rounds. The Belgian’s opening round loss to Lois Boisson at Roland Garros was an exception, but what the Frenchwoman went on to achieve put that result into perspective.
Prediction: Mertens in 2

Tope:
Linda Fruhvirtova hasn’t made it past the first round of a Major since the 2023 Australian Open, and while she leads their head-to-head, this is the apt time for the in-form Belgian to equal it.
Prediction: Mertens in 2

Yesh:
Elise Mertens just doesn’t lose in Slam early rounds. She’s too solid and too consistent. She should be able to get through Fruhvirtova, who is also talented but not as consistent.
Prediction: Mertens in 2

Lulu Sun vs Marie Bouzkova

Jordan:
This is an interesting clash of former Grand Slam quarterfinalists. Although Bouzkova has only played one match on grass heading into this contest, I think she is a slight favorite. Sun can leak errors against players who prioritise defense, and being solid is the basis of Bouzkova’s game.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 3

Tope:
One ranking spot apart, but Bouzkova arrives here in better form. The Czech has made it to the Wimbledon second round in each of her last three visits and that should continue against Sun, who hasn’t won a Grand Slam match since Wimbledon last year.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 3

Yesh:
I tend to overestimate Marie Bouzkova. Basically, I think that when she plays well she basically never loses. Sadly, she doesn’t play near her best anywhere near often enough. The potential is always there, though.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 2

Qinwen Zheng vs Katerina Siniakova

Jordan:
This is a dangerous opening round for Zheng. Siniakova’s game suits grass, and the Czech never getting beyond the third round at SW19 is surprising. Zheng’s movement is also worse on clay than other surfaces. An upset might be on the cards.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Tope:
Upset alarm here. Grass isn’t Zheng’s favorite surface and marry that with the fact she’s lost twice to Siniakova on it, it won’t be surprising to see the Czech advance in this one.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Yesh:
Siniakova is really good on grass, but Zheng has proven in the last two years or so that she is always up for massive runs at big events. I can’t count her out, no matter who she’s facing.
Prediction: Zheng in 3

Leylah Fernandez vs Hannah Klugman

Jordan:
Although Fernandez’s grass court season has been mixed until now, she should have no problems here. Klugman is a very talented 16-year-old who reached the final of the French Open juniors. But competing at professional level is very different, which was shown by her being soundly beaten in Nottingham and Eastbourne before Wimbledon.
Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Tope:
Hannah Klugman is still looking for her maiden top #100 scalp and, on this stage, and against Leylah Fernandez, she has to wait much longer.
Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Yesh:
Klugman has talent, and in a few years she might be ready to compete at this level, but she’s not there yet. She’s about to get a thrashing she’ll remember for a lifetime.
Prediction: Fernandez in 2
