Main photo credit: Peter van den Berg-USA TODAY Sports

Day 2 at the Wimbledon Championships marks the start of the second half of the draw, as players begin their main draw campaigns. No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner starts his tournament against fellow Italian Luca Nardi. Elsewhere, we have prediction articles featuring Novak Djokovic vs Alexandre Muller, Dan Evans vs Jay Clarke, Tommy Paul vs Johannus Monday, Lorenzo Musetti vs Nikoloz Basilashvili, Gael Monfils vs Ugo Humbert, Jack Draper vs Sebastian Baez, and Ben Shelton vs Alex Belt. But who will advance to the second round?

Wimbledon Day 2 Men’s Predictions

Francisco Comesana vs Corentin Moutet

Ilemona
This has the makings of a scrappy affair. Moutet’s craft could frustrate Comesana, especially on a surface where patience pays off. Expect some twists, but the Frenchman’s flair should prove decisive.
Prediction: Moutet in 3

Damian
This should be fun with Moutet coming off a big result in Mallorca and Comesana defeating Rublev last Wimbledon. The Argentinian has an underrated serve and can lead a player into making too many errors with his slices, but somebody like Moutet should be less vulnerable to it on paper. Comesana also got very tense at the Slam he played.
Prediction: Moutet in 4

Shane
Coming off a run to the Mallorca final, Moutet is playing great grass-court tennis and comes to the Wimbledon Championships with a lot of confidence. Comesana does not have much experience on the grass and will struggle with the Frenchman’s trickery.
Prediction: Moutet in 4

Flavio Cobolli vs Beibit Zhukayev

Ilemona
Cobolli’s more familiar with the big stage, but Zhukayev’s aggressive game could surprise him if he finds rhythm early. Grass rewards first-strike tennis, and that gives both players a real shot if they start well.
Prediction: Cobolli in 5

Damian
Zhukayev’s tennis is pretty one-dimensional, but you can’t deny the power of his serve and the flat groundstrokes can be a bother on this surface as well. It’s not enough to make him the favorite against someone as all-rounded as Cobolli, however it might be enough for him to keep this more interesting than it should be on paper.
Prediction: Cobolli in 4

Shane
Zhukayev’s power could cause issues fir Cobolli. In fact, I think it will push him to the brink. But in the fifth set, I will trust Cobolli, who has competed in more high-leverage moments.
Prediction: Cobolli in 5

Marcos Giron vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli

Ilemona
Giron’s grass-court movement could make the difference here. Ugo Carabelli prefers longer rallies and slower courts, which don’t come easy at Wimbledon. If the Argentine can’t adjust quickly, this could get away from him.
Prediction: Giron in 3

Damian
Ugo Carabelli never cared for grass much, but now that he’s at a higher ranking it’s opened up some doors for him. It’s just that his game doesn’t suit the courts whatsoever and most players in the draw probably wanted to draw him in the first round. Giron should be able to take advantage of this opportunity without much trouble.
Prediction: Giron in 4

Shane
I like Giron’s game on the grass. He has solid groundstrokes off both wings and does not mind coming into the net. Ugo Carabelli has played solid tennis of late, but the grass is not his preferred surface.
Prediction: Giron in 4

Jannik Sinner vs Luca Nardi

Ilemona
Both have had strong moments this year, but it’s a big stage and a big ask for Nardi. His lefty angles could keep things interesting for a while, though. This one might be more about how long he can hang in, rather than how far he can push.
Prediction: Sinner in 3

Damian
Sure, Sinner lost to Bublik in Halle. That doesn’t mean he’s not one of the main favorites for this title and opinions like “he’s not good on grass” are exactly as naive as they were regarding clay before the French Open. Nardi shouldn’t be able to do much here, the gap in quality between the two Italians is somewhat extreme.
Prediction: Sinner in 3

Shane
I like Nardi’s game, and his lefty firepower could have caused some upsets on the Wimbledon grounds. However, he has been given arguably the worst draw in the tournament. Sinner will roll.
Prediction: Sinner in 3
