Wimbledon rewritten: Jannik Sinner gets revenge and ends Carlos Alcaraz's reign
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Jannik Sinner rewrites history and gets revenge against Carlos Alcaraz to claim the Wimbledon title, breaking the Spaniard's remarkable streak at the All England Club. The World No. 1 avenges the Roland Garros final, winning the title 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in another epic showdown between the two best players in the world.

The match unfolded differently than at Roland Garros. Alcaraz – who was defending his 2023 and 2024 titles, in addition to a streak of 20 consecutive wins at Wimbledon – was the first to take the lead in the first set. This time, Sinner pressed the accelerator and didn't let the advantage slip once he had it, closing out an imposing victory without setbacks.

First Set

Sinner chose to start on the return, although he couldn't convert any break points against a focused Alcaraz early on. Both players looked strong from the baseline, though the Spaniard seemed better in long exchanges at the start. However, after 19 minutes, the break came for Sinner, following a great game where variations in height complicated the Spaniard, and the World No. 1 went up 4-2.

The pressure was palpable on Sinner in the latter part of the set, and surely the ghosts of Paris returned. Alcaraz reacted quickly, breaking back immediately and winning 12 of the next 16 points to go up 5-4. Sinner served to stay in the match, with nerves clearly evident. From 30-15 up, he struggled with his first serve and conceded an opportunity to Alcaraz, who had a couple of set points from the return. In an epic exchange, Alcaraz secured a second consecutive break and the first set 6-4.

Second Set

If there's one thing that has characterized the three-time Grand Slam champion, it's his ability to keep a cool head in complicated moments. At the start of the second set, he seemed to have already put a regrettable end to the first set behind him, starting with a break that quickly put him ahead. In the next game, Sinner saved a break point against him and moved ahead to 2-0.

The set's dynamic continued with Sinner being much more incisive in attacking his rival's second serve, and making notable efforts from the baseline to keep pace with the Spaniard. Sinner clung to his service advantage, and although Alcaraz managed to put pressure on him a couple of times, he didn't get any break opportunities. The Italian took the second set 6-4, raising the tension in a match that was more than living up to expectations for the high level of tennis on display.

Third Set

With everything even, the third set began with Sinner quickly creating break opportunities, though he couldn't convert them. On the other hand, Alcaraz managed with great difficulty to save the break, but regained confidence on his serve in the following games.

It became clear that this was more a mental battle than a physical one, with both players at an extraordinary level in exchanges, and where details would define the match. With the score at 4-4, Alcaraz had problems with his first serve and conceded a break opportunity to Sinner, who didn't miss the chance and took the lead. The World No. 1 closed the set with his serve 6-4, taking a deserved lead after keeping a cool head in important moments.

Fourth Set

The tension was at its maximum heading into the fourth set, with a start where the crowd was increasingly engrossed in the match. Alcaraz faltered and again gave a break opportunity, which Sinner took and clung to that slight advantage. The responsibility was on Sinner, who maintained concentration until 4-3, when he served to stay ahead.

At 15-40 and second serve, it was time for Alcaraz's comeback, but he couldn't convert it. The Italian went up 5-3 and was just points away from securing the 4th Grand Slam title of his career, just like a month ago at Roland Garros. Alcaraz defended his service game with authority, and then it was the Italian's responsibility, who won the last game without issues and closed out the victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Sinner claims his 4th Grand Slam title and breaks a streak of 5 consecutive losses against Alcaraz. The Italian found solutions to overcome Carlitos in probably the place where Alcaraz had performed best so far, and this only continues to increase the exciting rivalry between the two.
