It’s perhaps a women’s semifinal at Wimbledon that no one saw coming. Iga Swiatek is in the midst of her worst professional season and has never been great on grass. Belinda Bencic, meanwhile, returned from a maternity break less than a year ago. She’s now matched her career-best result at a Major, and is in the midst of her best Wimbledon. Who will reach the final, though? As always, we here at LWOS share our thoughts on the match. Who do you think will win?
Ateet:
28-year-old Belinda Bencic is in her second career semifinal in Grand Slams after she put up a great performance against Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. She has never been to a Slam final, and this will be a great chance for her to do so. Iga Swiatek is playing some of the best grass-court tennis of her career and will make her semifinal debut here. She gave a masterclass in returning against Liudmila Samsonova, and if she can find her best serving day against Bencic, she will be in the final. Swiatek won in three sets the previous time they met here, and I expect the same outcome.
Prediction: Swiatek in 3
Jordan:
Bencic will try to get joy by rushing Swiatek’s forehand, something Liudmila Samsonova managed to do for some of the second set in their quarterfinal. But Swiatek has handled that play much better than in previous years, and is one of the most significant reasons for her improvement on grass. Swiatek will also return better than Mirra Andreeva, who only broke Bencic once in two sets. Expect the sets to be competitive, but I like Swiatek’s chances.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Damian:
These two played a phenomenal fourth round here two years ago with Swiatek saving two match points. It was the kind of win that can often be a springboard towards the title, but it didn’t work out like that back then. Now she’s playing the best grass-court tennis of her career and will not be easy to stop. Bencic has a better shot than her previous three opponents with how low she can get to the ball and produce these nasty flat redirections. We’ll see a lot more errors from Swiatek’s racket here, but it’s tough not to back her to find a way right now.
Prediction: Swiatek in 3
Tope:
Belinda Bencic had a sluggish start to Wimbledon, dropping sets against two players outside the Top 100 before finally clicking into gear to defeat two of the hardest hitters in the sport, Ekaterina Alexandrova and the talented teenager Miira Andreeva, in straight sets each to reach within a match of her maiden Major final.
She has only managed to defeat Swiatek once in five attempts and lost their only fixture on grass–also at Wimbledon, two years ago, despite being a set up. This looks like a different version of the Swiss and she’ll certainly be under less pressure than the Pole. I’ll take a stab on her to win more than a set this time to play the championship match.
Prediction: Bencic in 3
Yesh:
Andreeva looked unstoppable, then Bencic took her entirely out of her comfort zone. The Swiss is playing the best tennis of her career right now, and she’s beating different types of opponents in different ways. I’m very tempted to think she’ll find a way to rattle Swiatek, too. Swiatek used to look like she never gets rattled–but she definitely has been this year. If there are cracks in her armor, Bencic will exploit them. Ultimately, though, I think the Pole is playing too well. Unlike in Paris, she’ll keep her cool.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
