The semifinals are set at the WTA Austin – ATX Open, and the lineup is strong for a 250-level tournament. Two of the top five seeds have made the final four, including world #4, Jessica Pegula. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for both the semifinal matches, but which two players will advance to the finals?
Head-to-Head: first meeting
McCartney Kessler won her second match in a row after dropping the first set, this time against the in-form Sorana Cirstea. Her excellent form on hard courts has given her enormous confidence in her ability to continue winning these long matches. The 25-year-old American has won 13 matches this season and will play her second semifinal. A win would place her back in the top 50, close to her career-high ranking of 47.
Greet Minnen backed her impressive win over Suzan Lamens with another solid performance against Caroline Dolehide. She won in straight sets but it was a close match. It was a huge win for the Belgian as she advances to her first WTA semifinal since September 2023 and will seek her first tour-level final. However, I think she will fall short against Kessler.
Prediction: Kessler in 3
Head-to-Head: Pegula 1-0 Tomljanovic
The top seed, Jessica Pegula, has been at her dominant best this week and has not lost more than three games in a set. Pegula was the clear favourite to win the tournament, and she has shown everyone why. This is her second semifinal of the season and she will be eager to get another chance to win her first title this year and head to Indian Wells full of confidence.
Ajla Tomljanovic is into her first tour-level semifinals since June 2024. Tomljanovic defeated Ena Shibahara in a fantastic three-setter and played some of her best tennis in clutch situations. Regardless of the outcome of the semifinals, the Australian will return to the top 100 next week. Double faults have been a problem for Tomljanovic throughout her career and she is averaging over eight double faults this week. A top player like Pegula will punish that. I believe the top seed will be clinical and win this in straight sets.
Prediction: Pegula in 2
