Maria’s run to the semifinal in London is one of the most unexpected of 2025. She was on a nine-match losing streak before beating Grand Slam finalists Leylah Fernandez and Karolina Muchova and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Although grass is the 37-year-old’s best surface, her form in recent months was so poor that a string of good results on any surface is surprising. Keys overcame Anastasia Zakharova and Diana Shnaider to set up this matchup.

Maria’s unique playing style of slicing almost every ball can potentially disrupt Keys’ powerful game, as happened to Rybakina. But I think the American will deal with it well enough to win. Maria was helped by Rybakina missing several easy balls, and I doubt Keys, who has an excellent record at grass court tournaments outside of Wimbledon, will make so many mistakes.

Amanda Anisimova vs Qinwen Zheng

Head-to-head: Zheng 2-0 Anisimova

Zheng recovered from a set down to beat Anisimova in both of their hard-court meetings last year. This match being on grass adds an interesting dynamic. Neither woman has always been the most comfortable on the surface, but each should enter the match with confidence after impressive victories against Emma Raducanu and Emma Navarro.

Although this match is a toss-up, I lean slightly more toward Anisimova. The Chinese No. 1 was able to use her superior movement to extract unforced errors from Anisimova in their previous meetings. That advantage will be lessened since she moves slightly less well on grass. Zheng’s powerful serve could be more critical to her chances than in their previous meetings.
