The WTA Rabat action has been fascinating so far, and that will likely remain the case in the quarterfinals. Teenage talent Maya Joint and former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic are among those scheduled to play. As always, we here at LWOT predict all the matches.
Head-to-head: First meeting
Both players won both their previous matches in straight sets without being at their best. The winner in this matchup is likely to depend on which groundstroke is dominant. Bouzas Maneiro’s forehand is superior, while Tomljanovic has a clear edge with the backhand. On clay, I favor Bouzas Maneiro slightly more. Tomljanovic does not like high-bouncing balls on her forehand, and the Spaniard is comfortably hitting her forehand with a lot of topspin.
Prediction: Bouzas Maneiro in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Mateas, ranked outside the Top 200, won both her previous matches in straight sets. The American will almost certainly need to scrap much harder to upset this year’s Copa Colsanitas champion Osorio, whose best surface by far is clay. Mateas’ aggressive groundstrokes have a chance of overcoming the Colombian, but I think Osorio’s defense might be too much for Mateas to overcome. She is also stronger mentally than the world No. 243’s previous opponents.
Prediction: Osorio in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Former US Open semifinalist Sevastova’s wins in Rabat and at the recent Mutua Madrid Open, after a 14-month absence from an ACL injury and another lengthy layoff before that while on maternity leave, are outstanding achievements. I think she might find it challenging to overcome Cristian, though. The Romanian is capable of getting her 35-year-old opponent on the run with her heavy topspin forehand. Sevastova needs an outstanding performance to hit herself out of trouble.
Prediction: Cristian in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
19-year-old Maya Joint, who beat Donna Vekic earlier this season, thrashed Katie Volynets 6-0 6-3 in the previous round. Li has more firepower than Volynets, making this a tougher matchup. Nonetheless, I still favor Joint to reach the semifinal. The Australian possesses an excellent backhand and will target the weaker wing of Li in the rallies. The American tries to control proceedings with her forehand in all her matches, but Joint can handle that at her best.
Prediction: Joint in 2
