Sha'Carri Richardson off U.S. relay team, out of Tokyo Olympics

American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson will not be representing USA Track and Field at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in any event.

Less than a week after it was learned that Richardson became ineligible to run in the women's 100 meters at the Olympics because she tested positive for marijuana at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last month, she was left off the American roster for the Summer Games. According to ESPN, the 30-day ban linked with the positive test ends before relays begin on Aug. 5, meaning she could've attempted to chase a medal as a member of the 4x100 relay team.

This past Friday, Richardson admitted to ingesting marijuana upon learning of her biological mother's death. In a statement shared by ESPN, USATF said it believes rules regarding cannabis should be reviewed but added:

"So while our heartfelt understanding lies with Sha'Carri, we must also maintain fairness for all of the athletes who attempted to realize their dreams by securing a place on the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team."

The World Anti-Doping Agency and the United States Anti-Doping Agency ban marijuana use during in-competition periods. Sports personalities such as former NFL running back Ricky Williams and other individuals have recently backed Richardson, but such words did not help her cause as it pertains to running in this year's Olympics.
