It’s fall, which means it’s a good time to play some autumnal games. Whether the entire game takes place in autumn or at Halloween, or the game just has certain sections that scream “fall,” there are some games that can get you in the mood for the nip in the air and the pumpkin spice treats. Here are five autumnal games that are sure to stimulate your excitement for this special time of year.
Any Animal Crossing game could have been on this list, but I chose the latest entry in the series because of the cooking and crafting systems. In addition to gathering mushrooms, pinecones, and acorns, and celebrating Halloween, you can create a variety of autumn and Halloween-themed items to dress your home and your island up for fall. Let your imagination run free as you deck your island for the season, then you can cook up some delicious pumpkin treats to show off around the island. Of course, you can’t forget about picking a Halloween costume and celebrating Halloween with your neighbors.
This Halloween RPG stars two kids who must fight the forces of evil while trick-or-treating at the same time. Different costumes can transform you, granting you some awesome battle skills. However, what really makes this an autumnal game is the atmosphere. As you go trick-or-treating through different neighborhoods and even a closed shopping mall, the game captures the lonely chill you might feel while trick-or-treating on a dark night. It brings you back to the days when you would gather up your courage to hunt for candy in the dark.
This cozy game spans all four seasons, meaning that the atmosphere changes for autumn. In addition to the trees turning delightful autumn colors, you get plenty of rain and gorgeous mist to capture the feel of spooky season. There is also a mysterious, creepy forest where you can dig for mushrooms. In addition, the town celebrates the Seed and Soil Festival, where you can celebrate the harvest and purchase blueprints to create some festive fall decorations.
Do I need to introduce Stardew Valley? Autumn of course plays a big part in this mega-popular cozy farming sim. You can forage for mushrooms and blackberries while enjoying the autumnal pixel art. You can also play games and win prizes at the Stardew Valley Fair. Of course, the highlight the Spirit Eve festival, where you can test your skills in a haunted maze and buy some wonderfully spooky decorations for your farm.
While this weirdly-titled game might not fit the traditional definition of autumnal games, it gets you in the mood for hot drinks, which, for me, are essential for fall. You’re tasked with serving drinks to fantasy creatures such as elves, fairies, and witches, and you must get everyone’s orders correct. It really tests your memorization and time management skills, and some of the recipes you can learn sound delicious. Of course, you can make pumpkin drinks, and as we all know, pumpkin spice treats are essential for autumn.
Autumn is about the atmosphere, and autumnal games can help get you in that right mood for this mysterious season. Whether you associate fall with a walk among the colorful leaves, a scare on Halloween, or a pumpkin spice latte, autumnal games can help you scratch that autumn itch. Have a happy fall!
