Zombies are a beloved pop culture trend that has aged well throughout the years and has turned into its own subgenre within the genre of horror. Some people think of the classic Night of the Living Dead when they think about zombies, and others think about The Walking Dead, a primetime series that exploded the zombie horror genre in recent years. The Walking Dead may have been the series that also exploded the trend of calling zombies different names in movies, shows, and video games.

Video games, especially, are pretty notorious for naming these entities something different. This allows developers to create different kinds of zombie-like creatures, putting their own flair on what players would expect these creatures to look and act like. Here are 8 different ways to say zombie in video games.

The Voteless: Helldivers 2

The voteless are zombie-like entities, former citizens of Super Earth who mutated, becoming mindless drones for the Illuminate.

Blighters: ZombiU

In ZombiU, the game is set in an apocalyptic UK, similar to the setting of the 28 Days series. Blighters are a common phrase in the UK, which basically means pests. This one was kind of a no-brainer, and it adds depth to the game, given that it takes place in the UK.

Husks: Mass Effect

Though Mass Effect is categorized as a military sci-fi media game, the creatures you fight are called Husks. They don’t look like your typical undead, but they act in a very similar way.

Freakers: Days Gone

Days Gone is one of the most popular zombie games on PlayStation, and the term “Freakers” is used to describe the undead in this apocalyptic world. It’s also a pretty interesting way to refer to the undead in any way.

Walkers: The Walking Dead

Now, if you don’t know this one, you’ve been living under a rock. Walkers exploded this trend of naming the undead differently in video games. Even other games refer to the undead in this way.

Zeds: Killing Floor

This is a new one, and it caught on pretty quickly. As the game suggests, you go through levels and waves of just killing zombies, so this game had to have a unique way of naming the undead. And it stuck, which made Killing Floor one of the best zombie games to come out within the past decade.

Infected: Various Games

The Last of Us and Dying Light are two of the most well-known games that name zombies as something fairly typical: The Infected. If it works, it works, and you don’t need to go changing things up just for creativity points.

Zekes: World War Z

World War Z is originally a film, but Saber Interactive released a video game version of the film in 2019. Zekes is also a pretty typical way of naming zombies, and it works for this universe. The zekes are somewhat insane to fight off, which makes for a pretty entertaining game.
