A Basic Beginners Guide to Dark Quest 4

While Dark Quest 4 is, overall, a fairly straightforward game, it never hurts to have a little more information to start things off. As such, if you are curious about the game but aren’t quite sure if you want to get it, here’s a rundown of the basics so you can make an informed decision.

Basic Combat

While the tutorial does give you a decent rundown of combat, it doesn’t quite paint the full picture. Now, the easiest way to move or attack is to double-click a square or enemy. However, you can actually move and attack all in one go.

If your character is ranged, first click your intended target and then move the cursor. A red or green line should appear, depending on whether or not the target is in your line of sight. Pick the square you wish to move to and click to confirm. Tada, you’ve moved and attacked.

As for melee characters, when you select a target to attack, four arrows will appear around it, one on each side. Clicking on one of these arrows will move you to that side of the enemy. Obviously, if you don’t have enough movement to get to the other side of the enemy, an arrow won’t appear there for you to interact with. I’m primarily mentioning this because the arrows can be somewhat hard.

Finally, the cards. While moving and basic attacking are simple enough, if you want to use a special ability or an item, you have to use that particular card. If it’s an active ability, activate the card and then proceed as normal. If it’s an item, the game should give you instructions. You can only use a card once per combat, so make sure you utilize them wisely.

The Characters of Dark Quest 4

As demonstrated in the tutorial, you will only be able to use 3 characters when going on a quest. After a character is used, they will gain the “Fatigue” state. This will reduce their HP by 1 the next time they enter a dungeon. You can remove this state by letting them rest. However, if you decide to bring a character with “Fatigue” on a quest, the effect will stack. That said, so long as you let a character rest, all of their “Fatigue” stacks will be removed.

However, if you keep bringing a character with “Fatigue” into dungeons anyway and they eventually reach a number of stacks equal to their HP, you will be unable to finish the dungeon (the victory prompt won’t appear), and you’ll have to abandon it. This means that you can’t just keep using the same characters over and over again, or you’ll be putting yourself at a great disadvantage.

When you leave a character in camp while others are on a quest, they will gain the “Well Rested” state, which will give the character 1 extra HP the next time they enter a dungeon. Like “Fatigue,” this effect stacks; however, it only goes up to +3. Bring a character on a quest who is “Well Rested” will remove all stacks of the state.

Finally, if your character dies inside a dungeon, don’t worry. You will get them back once you leave (either by completing the quest or failing it). However, any character who died during the quest will be “Injured”, which means they will start at half health if you bring them into a dungeon. “Injured” is removed if you let the character rest.

The Camp

There are a total of 5 NPCs in the camp. The first, and most important, is The Elder. He’s the one who gives you the quests, which is how you progress through the game. Then there is Torik the Trainer. He is the one you go to so that your characters can learn new abilities.

Vanoor the Merchant allows you to purchase a variety of powerful cards. Some are party-wide buffs, while others are special abilities that can drastically change the outcome of a fight if used correctly. Each character can hold one such card, meaning you can have up to 3 of them with you per quest.

Morga the Alchemist sells potions. Each character, except Ishann, can hold 2. Ishann can only hold one. Potions have a range of effects but can only be used once per quest. However, you do get them back once the quest is over.

The final NPC is Moltar the Blacksmith. He provides weapons that the characters can equip. Each weapon can only be bought once and can only be equipped to one character, so you have to pick who gets what and when. This means you might need to do a little weapon juggling.
