The Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of much hype and controversy for the past few weeks. Among the complaints about the high prices of the system and games, Nintendo is also releasing special “Switch 2 Editions” for select Nintendo Switch 1 games. These editions will include various extra features, and they will, of course, cost money, even if you already own the Switch 1 version of the game.

Nintendo’s official site states that Nintendo Switch 2 editions will include “the original game and its upgrade pack, which enhances the game to take advantage of the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” If you already own the game, you will need to purchase an “upgrade pack” in order to enjoy the new features. However, people who have a Nintendo Switch Online membership with the Expansion Pack will receive the upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for free. Of course, this doesn’t cover other games, and gamers will lose the upgrade packs if they cancel their subscriptions.

How Much Will the Upgrade Packs Cost?

Nintendo’s preorder page for the Switch 2 games reveals the prices of the upgrade packs. Here are the current prices for the different upgrade packs.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: $9.99
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: $9.99
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree: $19.99
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land: $19.99

It should be noted that the Switch 2 editions of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land will have extra gameplay content, while Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will only have a few extra features and are mainly boasting crisper visuals and higher framerates.

Will the Upgrade Packs be Worth It?

Given that the console itself will cost $450 and the console’s accessories recently got a price increase, it’s hard to tell if people will shell out the money for these upgrade packs. Many gamers might opt to save their money for an entirely new game like Mario Kart World instead of spending $10-20 for some add-ons to games they already have. However, it should be remembered that when several Wii U games were rereleased on the Switch with extra content, gamers had to buy the full games again to play them on the Switch. Compared to that, maybe the upgrade packs’ prices aren’t so bad after all.
