The Super Mario Galaxy games are coming back, yay! Now a new generation can discover them, and the old generation can reexperience their magic. However, once again, Nintendo is under fire for overcharging. After they charged $450 for the Nintendo Switch 2 and $80 for Mario Kart World, Nintendo is already the subject of a lot of money controversy. So, the question remains: is the rerelease of these fifteen-year-old games overpriced?
As Nintendo’s official site says, purchasing the two games together will cost $69.99, while purchasing them individually will cost $39.99 each. When compared to Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which was released five years ago, the prices seem steep. After all, Super Mario 3D All-Stars cost $59.99 and it included three games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Essentially, you were paying $20 per game, which was a pretty good price for three classic games.
It’s no secret that Nintendo wants to milk money out of its fans. However, let’s look at how much Wii games cost when they were new. The original Super Mario Galaxy was released in 2007, and a first-party Wii game typically costs $50-60. According to Dollartimes.com, $50 in 2007 is roughly $78.20 today when adjusted for inflation. Considering that Nintendo is selling the bundle of both Galaxy games for $70, that actually sounds like a bargain.
However, many people will also think that older games shouldn’t be sold at full price. These games have had their run already. There are many retro game collections that you can buy for under $20, and they typically include more than two games. From that point of view, it looks like Nintendo is once again overcharging its customers.
I already own the first Galaxy game as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, but I will definitely be buying Super Mario Galaxy 2. Do I think it should be cheaper? Yes, but I also believe in supporting retro game rereleases. It’s a way to tell game companies that yes, we want these games preserved for future generations. Plus, the Galaxy games are spectacular. I know I won’t regret my purchase.
