Banned for Smurfing? Marvel Rivals Player Takes a Break, Returns to Quick Ban
- Marvel Rivals courtesy of IGDB

Smurfing, it’s a practice that’s frustrating to other players. It’s a problem Marvel Rivals is trying to address, but players don’t think NetEase is doing a good job of it. When an innocent player gets banned, it sure looks like they’re right.

What is Smurfing?

If you’re thinking of little blue people with white hats and pants, you’re on the wrong track. Smurfing is the word gamers use for highly skilled players who create a new account so they can be matched against less experienced players. They might do it because they enjoy beating less skilled players, boosting a friend’s rank, or just winning more easily. Whatever their reason, it’s generally frowned on and, in Marvel Rivals, it’s a violation with consequences.

The Ban Details

Reddit post from poorF2Pnoob

Reddit user, poorF2Pnoob, shared their story a few days ago. They had taken a break from the game after reaching the rank of Celestial. The problem with being away for a long time is that they were automatically deranked over time and came back to a rank of Silver. After playing a few games, they received a ban for smurfing. The punishment? They were suspended from competitive mode for the rest of the season, plus the penalty of resetting their rank and score. What??

The question everyone should have on their minds is, how does that fix the issue? So, when the ban is over, the player (still a skilled player) returns to a much lower rank. Then they play the game and get flagged for smurfing again? If you’re shaking your head, then you aren’t alone. Other Reddit users had thoughts on the situation.

“How will resetting the rank mitigate this lol? They want smurfs in even lower elo next season so they can smurf harder??” – ms6936

“Reason number 2000 why a rank reset with no placement matches is the dumbest thing to put in a competitive mode.” – Superb_Catch4018

“These guys will really do everything except add placement matches” – Apprehensive-Emu315

What’s the Solution?

Like some players have mentioned, there’s been a call for NetEase to implement placement matches at the start of the season. That way, players would start at a rank more fitting to their skill. So far, it seems like they aren’t planning to give the players what they’re asking for. Even though the current system is clearly not working as intended.

The good news is that poorF2Pnoob was unbanned, so they’re back to being able to play, but that doesn’t take back the frustration faced by the player or others who have surely faced the same issue.
