BioShock Remake or Movie Reveal? 2K Might Be Returning to Rapture Soon

We might be returning to Rapture, everyone! According to new information from Kurakasis over at MP1st, 2K is gearing up for an announcement—and there are plenty of arrows pointing us to something BioShock-related! We don’t know when the drop will happen, but some believe that it could be before the end of summer. Summer Game Fest is right around the corner, so it’s probably safe to start sweating about it now!

What’s The Deal With Rapture?

2K has been as tight-lipped as a Big Daddy suit with much of the info, but some leaks of it have given way to rumors that several references to BioShock from 2007, the og game. That’s right, the underwater city of Rapture—the creepy, gilded reverse aquarium that launched a philosophy lesson for years to come—is back in the spotlight. So, what does it mean?

There are several possibilities (brings out large board with red string attached):

  • As per the norm of announcements this year, a full remake or remaster of the og BioShock, quite possibly, brings the game up to modern next-gen standards.
  • A possible Netflix adaptation (which, awesome) that might take place within Rapture but not necessarily in the plot of the game. Maybe a movie detailing the early days of Rapture just before the downfall?
  • Or—stay with us—BioShock 4, but instead of a new location as early rumors had us suggesting, we are returning to Rapture. Possibly a whole new section that was only hinted at in the og game?

Anyway (throws board back in the closet), no matter the theory you go with, it’s clear that Rapture is the central point for whatever 2K is concocting in their HQ. But hey, we’re not going to complain. Well, maybe a little if the game isn’t good.

Generation Refresh?

Not to make anyone feel old (hides own bday date) but—it’s been almost 20 years since the og BioShock graced us with its demented presence. A whole new generation of gamers may not have experienced the twisted halls, the skin-crawling audio logs, and Bid Daddy-induced panic attacks. So if 2K is looking for a re-intro of the franchise, bringing the whole thing back to the Mainstream, it makes sense.

A  remake or remaster would onboard new players while giving the longtime fans a shiny, upgraded nostalgia trip. If there’s a potential movie? That’s a hype cocktail we’d readily drink up (mocktail as well, but please no plasmids).

Final Thoughts

With Summer Game Fest hitting next month and Geoff Keighley’s love for surprise reveals, there’s a strong chance that the announcement will take place then. Whether remake, return to Rapture in a 4th installment, or a first look at a Netflix adaptation—fans should keep their eyes open for any details in the news (preferably Total Apex Gaming)

Because this is big, and we are definitely going to be hearing more about BioShock soon. So, would you kindly keep an eye out?
