Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford had some very public concerns regarding Borderlands 4‘s performance, which was met with disappointment among fans. Still, the game has proven to be an enormous success by its player metrics, with its launch weekend being incredibly popular, setting a new record for the series. Despite the game achieving the highest concurrent player count on Steam within its first twenty-four hours, why has the narrative seemed so negative?
This perception stems largely from the online behavior of Gearbox’s president, Randy Pitchford, who spent days on Twitter dismissing fan criticisms of Borderlands 4. Specifically, he told unhappy players to seek refunds and deflects comparisons to other major titles. Although these actions created a narrative of trouble, the actual gameplay data tells a completely different and far more positive story.
The official Borderlands account released a graphic filled with impressive statistics from the launch weekend. Among these figures, over 1.5 million items were looted from outhouses, and more than 4.5 million grenade-related deaths. Additionally, players drove over 40 million miles across the Borderland 4‘s map, with one of the most telling stats involving boss fights. Notably, the community attempted over 62 million encounters and succeeded in more than 46 million of them.
Doesn’t that demonstrate a deeply engaged and persistent player base? In a rare calm tweet, Pitchford himself celebrated Borderland 4‘s great numbers. He exclaimed that not only had players engaged with the game a tremendous amount, but also confirmed that the online services remained stable throughout the entire weekend. Gearbox expressed gratitude for all the chaos players unleashed, distributing special Shift Codes as a thank-you gift.
Given the immense player activity and these celebratory gestures from the developers, it’s safe to assume that Borderlands 4 had a successful launch. The game has clearly secured a significant victory with its player numbers, achieving a peak of 304,398 concurrent players on Steam that Sunday. With this accomplishment, the game stands as one of the most successful launches on the platform. In fact, the title secured the number forty-six spot on Steam’s all-time concurrent player list due to this impressive peak, ultimately landing just below Elden Ring Nightreign.
So, how does Borderlands 4‘s achievement stack up against other major releases? The phenomenal launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong provides a great comparison, as it captivated audiences and reached a staggering 587,150 concurrent players on its first Saturday. This monumental number earned Silksong the seventeenth position on the all-time list, comfortably sitting between established giants like Apex Legends and Path of Exile 2.
With this context, the different tiers of success within the gaming industry can be better understood. Consequently, Borderlands 4 resides in the upper stratosphere of popular game launches. Similarly, the success of Silksong is on an entirely different level that mingles with the aurora borealis in terms of player engagement. This disparity highlights how a highly anticipated indie title can outperform a major AAA release from an established studio.
Typically, the weekend following a game’s launch represents its highest player concurrency. However, the arrival of a major sale or a significant content update may impact these numbers. Therefore, Borderlands 4 can rightly celebrate its strong position, having set a formidable new record for its own franchise. Ultimately, this success doesn’t mean the game’s performance is any less noteworthy, as it still represents a major commercial and player engagement success for Gearbox.
