Bwipo has been at the forefront of drama in the LTA in the past week. After comments made towards C9 and 100 Thieves’ top laner Dhokla, Bwipo has been under fire from the community. Yesterday, a video surfaced with him making sexist remarks regarding women and their inability to succeed in competitive games because of their period. While his previous comments divided the community, his sexist comments were met with heavy backlash.
Women in the Esports space have faced way more struggles than men. During a recent stream, Bwipo commented that one of the reasons holding women back is their period. He noted that men already get emotional about League, now imagine how much worse it would be for women. He said that you can not schedule competitive matches around periods and women should play on another account during that time.
Of all the things holding women back in Esports, their biology and periods are not one of them. As many have noted in response, women are not chosen because they will distract men and cause unnecessary drama within the space.
These comments were made on September 2nd, but grew in notoriety yesterday. Once it had surfaced, the community responded instantly. Many notable figures in the community commented on the situation, stating that Bwipo’s remarks set back women in the Esports space. One of the notes is that Bwipo has had emotional responses in the past based on his mental health issues. What makes him different from the responses that women would have on their period?
Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere took to X and TikTok to voice her response to Bwipo’s comments. She noted that women are unable to compete due to their period being a “dangerous rhetoric”. One benefit of his remarks is that it has brought conversations surrounding women in Esports. However, the way in which it has happened is far from ideal.
FlyQuest has responded to Bwipo’s sexist comments. They have suspended him for one LTA Playoff series and are giving his prize moment to support women in gaming. While it is better than most responses, many feel it is not enough. Suspending him for one series, which has little implications, feels like a slap on the wrist. FlyQuest has already qualified for the World Championship. Bwipo missing out on one series where FlyQuest already has a substitute means little. Hopefully, Riot responds soon and enforces a stricter punishment.
