Now I’ve written so many articles on this game because I love it that much, but Clive Barker’s Hellraiser Revival is an upcoming horror game based on the classic horror movie of the same title, and gamers will now experience the pain and pleasure of messing with the lament configuration and meeting the iconic Cenobites, particularly the leader Pinhead.

Announcements of the game have been few and far between, but a preview of the game was released during this year’s Gamescom, and some players had the absolute pleasure to experience the game in person (completely and utterly jealous BTW). Here is all we know about the game so far, and I have a lot to unpack here.

Hellraiser Revival: An Expansion of the Hellraiser Universe

The first Hellraiser movie became a household name, pushing the boundaries of horror during the 1980s. The concept alone is not something that would appeal to a lot of people. Adding the idea of sexual pleasure on the cusp of it turning to pain is downright blasphemous. This game not only expands on this idea, but it also shows the purest form this idea can take: The bloodiest, most disgusting showcase of gore, and the cycle of pleasure and pain that the Hellraiser series is all about. This game can showcase the disturbing ideas of Clive Barker’s original novel, unfiltered, and how the movie series was meant to be.

Game Mechanics and Sweet Beautiful Gore

Many gamers who’ve experienced the preview of Hellraiser Revival have compared it to the Resident Evil series, specifically Resident Evil Village. I can definitely see where they are coming from in terms of gameplay, calling it “a proper first-person horror game with puzzles, finding key items, and even in its combat.” It’s an homage to this type of gameplay, and pretty fitting too, because it makes the story that much scarier to go through. I mean, we all remember Resident Evil 7.

The best part of the game, and the part I am most excited for, is the gore. I’m not a gore fanatic by any measure, hated the Human Centipede and wasn’t a huge fan of the Saw series, but Hellraiser is one of my favorite classic horror movies ever. The execution of the movie, though it had its difficulties and flaws, brought a certain charm to it, from the practical effects of the gore to the mesmerizing acting of the Cenobites, especially Doug Bradley, a.k.a Pinhead.

Hellraiser Revival has definitely brought all that and more, because I can finally see what this movie could have been if there weren’t so many restrictions on film content. The different ways you see how a human body can be tortured, flayed, poked, and prodded, and those are the nicer things we encounter in this game, is absolute madness, and I am living for it.

Player’s Response, My Excitement, and Release

Players definitely have strong feelings when it comes to Hellraiser Revival. Given the fact that the devs of the game provided vomit bags for games during the preview at Gamescom, I mean, who wouldn’t react? I, for one, loved it because it means we are in for such a ride with this game. Ever since the announcement trailer came out a couple of months ago, I have wanted to wishlist it on my PlayStation account. I will definitely keep up to date with all future announcements of this game.

In terms of release, we don’t know much, other than that it is slated to launch in the coming year. We have already had the announcement trailer back in July, and last month we got the demo at the HANDS-ON Preview portion at Gamescom, which revealed the opening scenes, the Cenobites, the main protagonist, and gameplay mechanics. We should expect more updates on the release date in the coming months until its inevitable release next year.
