Hold onto your dice bags, Critters, because Critical Role just dropped the most ambitious D&D campaign announcement that’ll make your head spin faster than a nat 20 on initiative! Campaign 4 is happening October 2nd, and honestly? I’m genuinely concerned for Brennan Lee Mulligan’s sleep schedule at this point.

You thought juggling Dimension 20 was impressive? Well, our beloved chaos goblin of a DM just decided to take on thirteen permanent players for Critical Role’s next campaign. THIRTEEN! That’s not a D&D party—that’s a small army with commitment issues and really good character backstories.

The Cast That Broke the Internet (And Probably Brennan’s Sanity)

The original Critical Role crew is back—Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matt Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. But wait, there’s more! They’ve added Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Whitney Moore, and Alexander Ward to the mix.

Now, if you’re sitting there thinking, “That’s way too many players for one table,” congratulations! You understand basic math and have probably played D&D before. Brennan clearly knows this too, which is why he’s going full West Marches style with this campaign.

What the Heck is a West Marches Campaign?

For those who haven’t descended into the beautiful madness of tabletop RPGs quite this deeply yet, a West Marches campaign is basically D&D’s answer to “How do we fit everyone at the table without needing a table the size of Texas?” Players get split into smaller groups that share the same world, and their actions ripple across everyone else’s stories. It’s like having multiple TV shows set in the same universe—except with more dice and significantly less budget for special effects.

Brennan’s dividing our beloved chaos crew into three thematic groups: Soldiers, Seekers, and Schemers. The Soldiers will be doing what they do best—hitting things until they stop moving. The Seekers will uncover all those juicy world secrets that make us lose sleep theorizing about lore. And the Schemers? They’ll be neck-deep in political intrigue that’ll make Game of Thrones look like a casual Tuesday.

The World of Aramán: Where Gods Get Fired

The setting for this madness is Aramán, a world where mortals looked at their gods and said, “You know what? We quit.” And then they actually overthrew them! It’s been 70 years since mortals decided divine management wasn’t working out, and surprise—there are still some workplace issues to resolve.

The concept alone has me geeking out harder than a bard rolling persuasion on a dragon. What happens when you fire your gods? Do you get unemployment benefits? How do you update your LinkedIn? These are the burning questions that keep me up at night!

Why This Might Actually Work (Or Spectacularly Fail)

Look, running a campaign for thirteen players sounds like something you’d attempt after losing a very specific bet. But if anyone can pull this off, it’s Brennan Lee Mulligan. The man has been juggling multiple high-profile TTRPG shows while somehow maintaining his sanity and that infectious enthusiasm that makes us all want to cry happy tears.

Plus, they’ve got Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins—you know, the people who literally helped design D&D 2024—contributing homebrew content. That’s like having Gordon Ramsay help you cook dinner, except instead of getting yelled at, you get perfectly balanced game mechanics.

The first four episodes will be an “overture” introducing all thirteen characters and their interconnected stories. After that, we’ll watch the beautiful chaos unfold as each group carves their own path through Aramán. Will it work? Will Brennan survive? Will we get emotional over fictional characters making questionable decisions?

The answer to that last question is obviously yes—this is Critical Role we’re talking about!
